Ive been travelling for about a month, crashing at some couches, hotels and -of course- hostels. When i found the Caipihostel, it felt like home immediately.
People spoke both English and German (Portuguese and Spanish, too), it was super clean, mixed bathrooms didn't bother anybody (female-only bathroom also available) and they serve freaking Caipirinhas! Not that its hard to get one in Lapa, but having a drink or two before you leave the hostel: I loved it!
Sidenote: People were kinda super-careful when coming home late at night, so they wouldnt bother anybody. I guess that had to do with the family-flair of the hostel, it ain't as anonymous as some other places feel.
Oh and they sell T-Shirts... I got one! :D

Rio is the most amazing city that I have been to and CaipiHostel is located in the most amazing part of the city, enhancing to visit the old town, eat in tradicional restaurants and enjoy samba on the streets. I liked this hostel - it was comfortable and gathered a lot of interessting people. However, it wasn't that interesting to kceep you staying all they in and not to enjoy the city. CaipiHostel was full of Carioca's enery. I would really recommend it for all backpack travellers :)

The hostel has a great location, in the heart of Lapa neighbor, that is one of the main tourists atractions of the city because of the amazing nightlife around, it's full of bars and clubs nearby. You can also spend your night in the street once there are always some samba circles and street sellers seeling a good variety of drinks and food.
Caipihostel is even very safe, located in front of a big police station, the entrance is controlled by the front desk that allows people to get in by seeing who's trying by an outside camera. Furthermore the frontage doesn't look like showy, even a little bit, so it doesn't draws attention of bandits.
The staff is always friendly and prepared to give the most helpful informations, the baths are always clean, there are some good decoration scattered by the hostel's walls, there's a great bar into the establishment.

I stayed at the Caipihostel for 5 nights during my time in Rio for the Carnaval 2013. It was clean, felt safe and secure and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. Always there to make you caipirinha (lethal!) and sell you a beer.

What I liked is the key card access to the room and that you have to buzz in to get into the building. The surrounding area of Lapa isn't too dangerous but during Carnaval that extra bit of security was welcomed. The aircon was amazing - with lots of duvets to snuggle up under.

Good bus connections, good nightlife, the guy behind the reception, Beck, was adorable and super nice. The mixed bathroom got a bit gross sometimes but the girls only bathroom was always fine. Can't recommend enough. Made so many friends.

This hostel is located right in Lapa which is a place to party. I was there during Carnaval which was great since all the street parties were in the Lapa area. You can easily make it to other points of interest via the bus stop which is 2 mins away.

The staff was excellent and they even give you a welcome drink.

The negatives:
Since it was carnaval it was expensive but this is normal because it was carnaval.
WIFI signal does not extend to the top floor, So if you want to use WIFI in bed you might be out of luck.
The only big negative was the lack of communication via email. I emailed the hostel several times to make sure that my reservation was secure and for directions from the airport but I never received a reply.

Other than that I had a great time here!

The place is very nice, located close to the night life, the stuff is super friendly ready to help and support in everything you need. Rooms are clean just try to avoid the third floor as it´s e bit noisy cause of the air condition.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Things you should know before coming here:• This is a backpacker hostel and we praise the backpacker lifestyle. So, we chose to offer awesome facilities for free and a cheap price for the stay. All rooms are the same: 6 bunk beds (12 people), with spring matress, big individual drawer and bed light, wi-fi and security cards for each room. • We have air conditioning everywhere (in the rooms from 10pm to 10am) and a great common area with a happy hour bar, tv and a lounge area for smokers. We are really serious about having fun and sleeping. This means that after 11pm, the party must go on in the streets! Guests who do not respect this, will be invited to leave.• We don't have private rooms because we want you to meet new people and make friends. We also don’t have breakfast neither kitchen facilities because of some building issues. But food around here is really cheap.• We are in Lapa: a insane place with street parties, historical buildings, loads of bars and restaurants and amazing people from around the world; but it’s not a wealthy neighbourhood and you well see the real side of Rio, not just the postcard picture!• We’re not beside the beach, which means you’ll see more locals walking in the streets during the day, not only tourists. You can get there easily by bus (25min) or subway (20min); and what you spend to go there, you’ll save when you walk to the bars at night. • Remember: we only accept CASH! And the payment must be at the check-in. There are several ATMs on our street and the Police Central is in front of us. Read our terms and conditions too.• ... more   less
