“Such a Surprise”
Reviewed August 9, 2012

Being from California and growing up on Mexican food, a new Mexican restaurant here in Rio pretty much earned an eye roll... until I went. The chips are amazing, the corn tortillas themselves enough to make me want to come back. I ordered something I generally never would which was pulled chicken tacos, and they were excellent. I liked the food so much, I took a friend the next night. The owners care about the environment, there is organic meat, and there are gluten free options-- all rarities in Rio. I hope this is a trend for the future! They also deliver all the way to Santa Tereza and Centro!

“Burrito Chic!”
Reviewed August 8, 2012

OK, you're in Brazil. How "Mexican" could the food REALLY be? Really. Until you find out the owner IS Mexican whose wife is a finatic about healthy food! Just ask! They import a lot of their secret ingredients. Yes, the menu is simple, but the ingredients have been chosen very carefully based on taste and how healthy they are. It's not just ANY Burrito, Quesadilla or Taco. If you're looking for Tex/Mex, the sorta' Amercanized Mexican food with sour cream and ground beef, you won't find it here. Grab some chips, fresh guac and salsa, great 1800 Margaritas....and relax. The atmosphere is modern and has a vibe all its own. Yes, it costs a bit more, but since Rio is one of THE most expensive cities in the world (over New York and Paris)...I think you've got a heck of a deal! Enjoy!

“Tacos al pastor em Ipanema? Yes, please!”
Reviewed August 6, 2012

We love authentic Mexican food, and eat it at least once a week in the US. We were thrilled to find Azteka in Ipanema after reading about it online, and the place is spot on. The service was excellent, the food was prepared fresh and quickly, and the waitstaff speaks Portuguese, English, and Spanish (something we just haven't found much of in Rio!) Some reviews have mentioned that Azteka is pricy, but I beg to differ. For the quality and source of the ingredients, not to mention the ambience, you absolutely get your money's worth. We had tacos al pastor and cochinita pibil, and both were great. The corn tortillas used were fantastic - usually I don't like them that much, but these were perfect. The margaritas are excellent (and strong!), and the flan was delicious. The owners really have gotten it right - a lot of Mexican restaurants we have been to have enormous menus, and the quality doesn't always hold up. Azteka's menu is just the right size, and they seem to have perfected the dishes that they offer. Finally, the decor is really cool and unique. Azteka is definitely not to be missed if you're in the Zona Sul of Rio!

“OK”
Reviewed August 2, 2012

Nice but far to expensive for what it is, which is basically more of a snack bar than a proper restaurant.
I know the rents in Zona Sul are eye wateringly high.. but still we are in Rio.. not NYC or London town.
$55 for a couple of sandwiches and a few beers, should be more like 25/30 dollars.
However the food was tasty along with having friendly and professional serves, I would go back but only for 1 beer and to share 1 portion.. :(
...R$8's for a bottle of Beer..? first world prices for a 3erd worl... sorry developing country.
