The favela tour with Rodrigo was one of our most impressive activities during our visit of Brasil.
We heard about favela tours and first we had doubts about this kind of tour. We didn’t want to do a tour like a tourist safari – sitting in a bus taking pictures of people, houses and streets.
But as we read some really good recommendations on tripadvisor for Carioca free culture we decided to try it. The fact that Rodrigo grew up in Rocinha and knows this place was probably one of the reasons why we decided to take part of his tour.
To get in touch with Rodrigo and his wife is quite easy – we wrote an email and few hours later we got their answer containing all information for our favela tour on the next day: meeting point, time to meet, price and a little description. The tour started at Ipanema Beach where we took a minibus that brought our group of 10 persons to the entrance of Rocinha favela which is the biggest favela in South America.
To get to the top of the moro we took a motorcycle taxi which was an exciting and funny experience at the same time. From there, we walked through the narrow alleys of the favela for about four hours. Rodrigo and his colleague took us to places in the favela from which we had wonderful views on both – Rio de Janeiro with the Sugarloaf and Christo but also on the mass of little coloured houses in Rocinha.
During the walk, Rodrigo told us many stories about the past of the favela, current developments and threats for the social structure and life in a favela. He made possible that we could enter in private houses and really see the way of life of people in favelas.
