We were told about this small cafe/bar in Santa Teresa by the guide we had for a Tijuca forest trip. They had a great selection of sandwiches and beers and pretty good coffee, all served in an outdoor terrace that overlooks the street below. Great ambience, people watching and even birds if you are so inclined (I spotted both Columbina doves and Aratinga parrots sitting there). We had some quick ciabatta sandwiches, which were excellent and served with a garlicky chimichurri. And if you're nervous about your Portuguese skills, don't worry about it. The menu is in English and Portuguese and the servers have good-fluent English. They can also point you in the right direction for buses or other directions should you need them. Definitely worth a visit it when you're in Rio.
