My wife eat at Rascal´s Leblon about once a month.
From a price performance perspective, it is consistently good value; and stand´s out from the crowd in terms of restuarant chains in this respect. The owner is well known serial restuarant developer with a great track record of success; he really understands quality, service and pricing his products at the right point in the market.
The antipasta selection is always first class, the papunha a stand out treat.
Pizza´s are also very good, but gees, how hard is it to make a good pizza? I am always surprised by how many places screw up making pizza, usually by taking short cuts in quality of ingredients (especially the cheese) or not kneeding the dough sufficiently; pizza needs manual labour to work the air in the dough; fortunately Rascals does a reasonable job on this.
The hot dishes also quite good; if they have lamb fillets on the menu, I recommend.
Pasta is quite good, but perhaps the only area I would recommend they look at upgrading there selection and variety of sauces for the pasta. All it needs is a little more creativity and thought; usually there is 3 selections of sauces; a white sauce of some origin I am nor fully certain of, then a tomato and a meat sauce. Room for a bit more imagination here.
Normally the staff are very well trained, but like so many places in Brasil at the moment, staff turnover and rotation is very high, so I have seen some recent exceptions of staff that are clearly in "Learning Mode" about customer service ( ie surly, avoid certain tables, did not understand a thing about wine, forgot an order, etc). I think this happens when a chain of restuarants grows as quickly as Rascal has, it takes time to build a great team and you always have the slow learner or 2 in any team. There are a couple of waiters we normally insist upon because they really know good service, so once you work out who are the good waiters, just ask for them to serve you, management at Rascals most compliant.
The wine list is quite good, reasonably priced and in synch with the overall price performance of the restuarant and the harmony with the food.
Never ever encountered an error with the bill, btw, which is a pleasant surprise in Brasil.
Pick your time to go though, it does get busy at lunch and dinner time; go early or late.
Overall, a really pleasant experience.
