Description: Located in a charming house built in the 1930's, with a privileged view of the Nossa Senhora da Paz square, in Ipanema, the Cavist Vinoteca & Restô offers a light and modern environment, with a menu inspired by the french-italian cuisine, with a brazilian touch. On the first floor, apart from the restaurant, you can find a wine store with over 2 thousand labels from 16 different countries, offering the best when it comes to wine. On the second floor, a delightful balcony, where the most disputed tables in the restaurant are, is the ideal place for unforgettable evenings and nights.

We went there just to taste some good wines : Mistake!. Though the name refers clearly to wine, it's a restaurant and they don't seem very interested by costumers who just want to have good time tasting few nice glass of wine. However, I can't talk about the food.

Cavist came highly recommended - we read the reviews on Trip Advisor and decided to give it a try. We wanted something nice and figured a wine bar would be perfect. We had met another couple who stumbled upon this place randomly after the hotel concierge recommended a different place. The other couple said they really liked it so "why not...."

The place really tries to be hip and swanky. It did kind of work, but it was definitely reflected in the prices here. The wine list was extensive but a bit on the expensive side. We ordered a special polenta which really wasn't like anything I had before. It was tasty but my wife didn't like the texture of it at all. It wasn't traditionally cooked for sure. We had the cheese plate and the portion was generous but the cheese selection was locked (couldn't deviate). The cheese was tasty and the bread was delicious.

Overall it was a decent place but in my opinion it really wasn't worth the price. If you like nice ambiance and big wine selection - this place might be up your alley.

Bistrot is located at the back of the wine shop. There, depending on where you sit, you manage to get some privacy and are able to enjoy your meal. Food is really tasty, although portions could be more generous for the price. On the plus side, you have a decent selection of wines to pick and pair with your food (make sure you select the wine before you sit as there is no wine list). Service was attentive and waiter behaved what anyone would expect. When you add up meals, wine, dessert and a coffe, the bill gets pretty high. Not for everyday.

First you choose your wine from a huge selection. We were seated on the terrace, very romantic. The wine was decanted and poured but then the disappointing food came. The salad was okay but the poached egg appetizer had no flavor. The entrees took a very long time. The sauce on the filet mignon was good but the lamb was tough and undercooked (almost impossible to cut with a knife). So go for the wine and forget the food.

We went to Cavist on an early Thursday evening. I was pleasantly surprised by the wide selection of wines available - pick a wine and have with your meal - excellent and good pricing for Rio. Unfortunately service at restaurant was a little too casual. Now we were out early so staff shift was occurring but still not as attentive as I would expect. Food was good and wine made it better - so good value - terrace outside is great !
