I couldn't believe it when I entered the huge hall which had books from top to bottom, from left to right! It felt like heaven for someone like me, who is into books. There is an impressive collection of books in Portuguese and in most other languages. Gotta check it out!

I don't agree with most of the other reviews. It would not be in a top 50 list of things to see in Rio, unless you love books and libraries.

Free guided tour in English (approx 40 minutes). The guide was very hard to understand. Lots of interesting artefacts and historical items. I was delighted to view a first edition of Macchiaeveli's "The Prince", complete with notes in the margin. The building itself is interesting, but you cannot take photos, except in the foyer.

Tips:
Very close to Cinelandia Metro
Bring photo ID: you won't get in without it (photocopy of passport OK)
You will need to store your bag
Lots of walking and stair climbing
Close to Bela des Artes and Theatro Municipal, so you can combine the three quite easily

Summary:
Personally, I liked Trinity College Library, Dublin a lot more
The staff are all very friendly and try to be helpful

Very beautiful library. Very much worth a quick visit. If you need a quiet place in the noisy city this may be the answer. No AC.

This ancient library was made by the portuguese people that colonized Brazil. People say its the oldest one in Rio. Is no t big like the Biblioteca Nacional but is very beautiful and you can learn something about brazilian history there.

Real Gabinete Português is not one of those attractions for which you have to make a line or take unusual paths to get. It is located downtown, where the atmosphere is quite busy during week days. The building doesn't really reveal what should be expected indoors from the outside which just make it a nicer surprise when getting there. The interior's architecture and arrangement of the collections of books looks just amazing. Even though it is quite busy during weekdays around there, there should just be taken some care getting there and around, since it is not a very safe area.
