Where the old center Rio still exists and lives.. much to rediscover on the neigborhood every time.. a painter.. a poet .. a samba..
Those ever-changing natural juices for breakfast.. where to stay all day no rush.. perfect return from a day on the beach.. easy..
Where you can catch up your readings and even start writting a book for fun..
Hope the "bonde" is back on track..
Stepping out the door you hesitate left or right..
Place to go back to!

Anyone planning a trip to Rio de Janeiro needs to start their trip in Santa Teresa and stay at Casalegre Art Vila. The staff welcome you and make you feel like this is your home. I was in Room 204 with the glass floor, it is one of the coolest features I've seen, especially when the light is on downstairs and it comes up through the room. Casalegre is within walking distance to all the restaurants and bars in Santa Teresa. Daniel, Ivan, Carolina, Rapheal and all the staff speak English, making it easier for non-Portuguese speaking tourists. The best is the 'Honesty Bar' they have!!! I will always come back and stay at Casalegre Art Vila.

Room Tip: Room 204, high ceilings, private bathroom, kitchen area, glass floor!

The famous Calasegre art vila is the first choice for your accommodation in Rio de Janeiro while you choose to stay at the bohemian part of the city, in Santa Teresa. Comfortable room, delicious breakfast, very helpful staff. We highly recommended, for sure it worth it to pay a bit more but to stay like your home in a place full of character, art and really hospitality. Do not miss it out.

Room Tip: Book early, as of the small amount of rooms, it fills up very quickly.

Very nice characteristic house with high ceiling rooms in Santa Teresa. Great, cool and relaxed guys who are very helpful. They speak their languages very well. Breakfast not special, but OK.

On the tram line (but the tram has been suspended for safety reasons) charming area. Loved the outdoor eating and the 'honesty bar' we had a room with shower and it was a little spartan but perfectly adequate. The staff were so friendly. Had a great time in Rio. This place had character.

The only good thing about this place is the very friendly staff. The rest is pretty awful and does not appear to know what it is trying to be. It is really a backpacker hostel but is trying to promote itself as something much grander. We had not realised when we booked our flights that it was carnival time and we had great difficulty finding somewhere to stay. We knew that we were paying at least double for the room but, from the description had expected much better. We were travelling with our adult son and the room was described as a large room with separate sitting room with an extra bed. The main bedroom was tiny and there was no place to hang anything or put our luggage. The sheets were too small for the bed and the matress had no cover on it. Small, thin towels, no air conditioning, no cleaning of the rooms and we only had soap when we asked for it.

If the normal prices are low it is good for backpackers but not for anyone else.

Room Tip: Don't stay here. Don't stay here if you don't like dogs. There are 2 big ones around all...

We've much appreciated the review as we are always willing to improve our services and facilities.
As they said, it was Carnival and they couldn't find the expected place for their vacation. It is normal that the prices double during National holidays and we adjust our rates only during New Year and Carnival. A lot has been improved in the last months and now we include soap and arrange proper bed sheets and mattress covers in the rooms. We never advertised air conditioning in the rooms and we've provided an extra fan as they complained about the heat (Note that no other guests complained about it).
We did feel bad for them as we noticed they were having difficulties to enjoy their time in Rio: the city gets crowded during Carnival and it's pretty much all about partying.
We highly recommend travelers to plan their trips and research about destinations in advance so they avoid unwanted surprises.
