We really fancied some thai food after eating heavy Brazilian food for 3 weeks and Mekong did not disappoint! Firstly, I have to say that we were welcomed with smiles, prompt and efficient service and ate some very good food too! We had the coconut prawns, stir fried beef, pad thai and two delicious cocktails and thought it was extremely good value compared with the rest of Rio. The food is not exactly authentic but it is very close and it tastes good and the service was second to none.

We had prawn and coconut milk samosa to start which came with three very flavoursome dips.
Delicious balance of flavour, grown up cooking with the fun left in. Tom yam goong again was great. The rice was just sticky enough. There is an attention to detail here that has been sadly lacking in most restaurants in Rio.
The atmosphere is relaxed and stylish the staff were friendly and efficient, so after one too many lemongrass Martinis we went home thoroughly satisfied. By far the best eating out experience in Rio so far..

On the recommendations of tripadvisor customers we dined here for valentines dinner cause we were a little over all the stodgy food that Rio has to offer....our waiter was great with his limited English but all downhill from there. We started with the Vietnamese rice paper roll..it was 1 in total & very average at 14R & did not even have the right accompanying sauce...we then tried the prawns with coconut & coriander which looked nothing like the picture & had no hint of coriander..just prawns dipped in coconut.Next was the Banh Mia..one of my absolute favourites..there was no coriander, daikon or carrot as menu said..just pork & lettuce plus sauces...a total disgrace ( note to owner & chef ) this also should contain spring onion + cucumber + a good dark soy + chilli if you are really to put this on your menu!! Next we had the green shrimp curry that was more like a soup than a curry & the shrimps were so tiny & tasteless. I don't know what the rest of the reviewers have been sampling but at 180R for dinner this place needs to have a serious look at its recipies & it's authenticity...I so wanted to try the Pho but seriously why would you?? This place has a great little set up with some sweet tunes being played but get your kitchen together.

If you want to make it to Mekong by foot from ipanema, dont follow map given on this app... Its 6 roads off !!! We ended up catching a taxi after discoverying Mekong was not on the spot this map said it was on !!!
Coming from Asia, i know my Thai green curry chicken and sadly mekong's version is nowhere close. The only flavour i could taste was salt which is typical of brazilian cooking.
My husband had beef noodles. His was tasty but the portion was so small, good enough for just a starter & very pricey for 20reais!!
After reading the reviews on Mekong, we made an effort to come here to taste the food, looking forward to good asian food but ended up very disappointed.
If you know Asian food, this place is not for you
