“Escaderia Selaron”
Reviewed August 29, 2013

Very unusual sight. These are steps in the Lapa district which were tiled by George Selaron (who was found dead with burn marks on him in Jan 2013).
The steps have been decorated with multi-coloured tiles, many donated by visitors. There are tiles from various countries in the world, many with slogans, religious tiles, and there are probably over 100 steps.
Definitely worth a quick stopover. Its in the Lapa district, and not on a main road.

“A perfect way to enter Santa Terese”
Reviewed August 24, 2013

This is a fun, interesting art instillation that leads right up into the Santa Terese neighborhood. The tiles are from all over, some naming worldly locations, others tributes to the artist, or just random cool things. I took a lot of time to view them and found them humorous and sweet. Then I seamlessly continued into a lovely afternoon touring the quaint hillside neighborhood. There were police stationed at the bottom of the stairs (along with a few sleeping people and a loud drunk lady) ...but I never felt unsafe, just keep your wits about you. Definitely recommended.

“Unique and quirky artwork....”
Reviewed August 6, 2013

The day after Carnival night is perhaps not the best of times to visit – rubbish everywhere and our olfactory senses were reeling! However, the steps and walls covered in tiles is a tribute to the Brazilian people mapped out by a Chilean born artist – Selarón.

We didn’t climb all 250 steps but we did see a whole bunch of some 2000 tiles from over 60 countries. His work is ongoing and after obtaining most of the tiles from building sites, lots more have been donated from visitors. This attraction has an undisputed international following around the world - best to visit during the day though!

Enjoy your experience!
