The only thing this place has of a hotel is the name (that incidentally has been removed from the front as part of the renovation). The room was dirty, the beds used and abused, the carpet completely stained, half the tv channels didn't work and the shower disgusting (rusted shower head). Sadly it was one of the only hotels available and recommended by hotels.com. I now understand why it still was available. Hope they really renovate the place and make it into a hotel as the location and original structure (untouched since it was built 70 yrs ago?) would have lots of potential.

The city was fulll and this one was the only place available! Never ever again! Big, but very old rooms with totally uncharming furniture. Very dirty and old carpet floor. They are refurbishing the restaurant, so workers began to make noise at 7 am and did not stop anymore. Only good thing was the location and breakfast was ok, but I will never ever stay here again!

I would agree that this is a strictly no frills hotel, but my room was very clean, no smells, and was absolutely enormous, with a huge bathroom and an excellent shower! The location is unbeatable at this price - as well as the beach, the back room that I was in had a small balcony and a great view over the mountains and the Christ statue. Breakfast OK, standard Brazilian buffet. The reception was always staffed at all hours, and I saw no real reason to be concerned about security. WiFi was about £10 a day - standard in Brazil. Very friendly staff at reception.

My overall message would be, if you want US style hotel decor in Brazil, go to the Marriott or the Hilton or the Sofitel. You won't have any surprises. In a hotel like this, that clearly caters to a mainly Brazilian clientele, you may be surprised - pleasantly as often as not in my view, and you will learn a lot more about the country.

Room Tip: Room 1205 - great view, twin beds

This 1950's hotel has an absolutely wonderful location opposite Copacabana beach, but it looks, feels and smells as though it hasn't been touched since it was built!
Windows on the outside of the building no longer have glass, the foyer is sparse to say the least with minimal security and the once elegant interior now feels like something from The Shining.

My second stay in this hotel in the last three years. Every other hotel was full My colleague had his credit card skimmed by the waiter in the cafe/bar downstairs!! A large sum was withdrawn from his account illegally. Another colleague had her laptop stolen from her room on our previous stay!

Old a and dirty rooms and batthrooms. Old, non-working window airconditioners. Room is noisy as hell if you are facing the beach.Lifts barely work. No internet Dining room downstairs turns into a noisy nightclub on weekends.

On a positive note the food in their dining room was tasty and good value.

I arrived here hot and tired on a day when Rio had a soaring temperatures of 39 degrees.I tried to turn on the air conditioning in my room and it fell off the wall. I was hungry and went to the restaurant and it was closed for refurbishment. The nearest bar appeared to be full of working girls - whom I fully respect but just so you know. I was eaten alive by mosquitoes as I had to leave the window open. I came back next day and the air conditioning machine was still on the floor. I asked for help, it was promised and none came. The door to my room looked like it has been broken into to but I think that was just the door. This was clearly once a nice hotel but if it has simply lost its way and it is about time some internet guides caught up with that. My usual advice for Rio applies - if you want to stay somewhere nice - go to Ipanema. I hope somebody spends some money on this hotel before the Olympics.....in the meantime - sorry, no.

It’s a pity that a nice building facing Copacabana Beach, with beautiful art deco architecture and huge rooms, is completely wasted in one area where the square meter is rated one of the most expensive in Rio. Any visionary hotel brand as W Hotels, One & Only, Anantara, Grand Millenium… etc… should buy this property and make it a hotel to compete with the next door Copabana Palace. There are too many disgusting things about this place, the bathroom is old, ugly, dirty with stains, the linen and bath towels are old with poor quality, the carpets look as if they've never been vacuumed (I was afraid of finding bugs on it), the T.V and AC are old and noisy I decided to sleep with the window open to fresh the room, what was almost impossible in Rio. The elevator works badly, the lobby is dark they don’t use the natural brightness of this sunny city, the entrance bar and the first floor restaurant are claustrophobic. The breakfast is poor. The staff is not friendly, except people from the front desk who are very, but very nice and work very hard. It’s a nice property that just needs investments in all points to worth paying more than R$ 200.00 per night for a single room.
