“Best food by weight we have in Rio”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 19, 2011

There are many choices of food here freshly made. The food isn't that salty compared to other places we've been to. Orange juice (laranga) is very refreshing. We went there a bit late for lunch and the place is still crowded. It seems to be popular among locals too. They have promotion if you come early. The complimentary coffee and tea are provided on the way out but don't taste that good. There is also a free wifi.

For food by weight restaurant, the paper bill will be given at the gate. Bring it along with you. Start choosing what you like. We recommend rice and chicken here. You can walk around to see what they offer before start taking anything in you plate. Bring the dish to weight station. They'll record the price on paper bill. The price per gram of dessert is higher. Some place even separate the plate for salad and appetizer from the main dishes. You can order drinks from your table. Normally they don't speak English so better prepare some basic Portuguese words to order.

Totally recommend this place. We love many dishes here. The price is so reasonable too.

“Yes, There IS Customer Service in Rio!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 24, 2011

I was in Rio with my partner, and we were deeply disappointed in the customer service provided by the vast majority of places. The general feeling was that the cariocas couldn't care less, thought they were doing you a favour by serving you, and would take every single opportunity to take more money from you whenever they could. That's why we were pleasantly surprised when we came across Expresso Grill.

At the door, as we weren't too sure we wanted to eat there, we were invited in to have a look around. We found out that they offer a wide range of salads, some pasta dishes, and desserts, among other things, all by what they call the 'kilo' system - you pay according to the weight of what you eat. They also cook meat (beef or salmon) to order and right in front of you if you want to watch. Or you get to pick the piece you want, and by the time you've helped yourself with salad, rice and other things, sat down and had your drink delivered, your meat is ready.

Speaking of drinks, my partner's beer came in a bucket filled with ice. Considering how hot it was, it was a very welcome touch.

The food was tasty, although some of the dishes could be warmer. However, in that respect and to their credit, when another customer sitting at a table near us complained that her pasta was cold, a waitress offered to re-heat it, and someone else (a manager, perhaps?) approached the customer to apologise, explain why it was cold ('Rondellis are thick, and need to be cooked for longer, which the person who cooked it probably isn't aware of'), and to cook her some fresh pasta at no extra charge. In my opinion, this is world class customer service.

The restaurant clearly has its regulars, which is not surprising. Value for money is excellent, although that's usually the case with 'kilo' restaurants (can someone open one in Inverness, please??) The deco is OK, not ostentatious but pleasant, and I'm not sure whether it can accommodate large groups due to the layout of the tables, which is suitable for quick meals, and I suspect for people who work or live nearby.

Expresso Grill is not the type of place to go for a big celebration or a gourmet meal, but as a tourist in Rio it is a great place to go if you're on a budget, and/or you want a place to eat good everyday food, and where you know you will be well looked after.
