I just read another review by hardii and many of his/her comments spot-on.

We chose to stay at this location because we arrived a late afternoon at Santos Dumont and next morning had to drive to the city of Juiz de Fora. A few days later we stayed at an inn in Ipanema for the actual visit to Rio.

We were together with our 8-year old daughter who also had a very positive view of the hotel - though she ended up not having time to enjoy the kids corner that was recommended to us by the very friendly staff.

There was a small problem right at the start, which was that soaps were missing from the soap-boxes in our bathroom, which is initially a bit deceiving, as it is apparently in a closet (but it's sufficiently large). However, we asked for new soap and those came very quickly indeed.

I did not have the correct plug adapter, though by no fault of the hotel, they are a new-build and had to install the newest Brazilian standard - some Brazilian government agencies seem to have nothing better to do than to define new plug-types that everyone must adhere to. Luckily, I found an adequate plug to charge my notebook in the bathroom. Wi-fi worked fine, as did the computer for general use in the lobby.

We chose not to spend R$ 28 for breakfast and from what I saw, it was slightly better than US standard, but sub-par for really good Brazilian hotels. For the price, I would expect something as good as I've seen at other above-average hotels in Brazil.

Possibly the highlight of the room was that, despite facing a busy avenue and the airport, we did not hear any sound from outside. Great windows! And my wife is the lightest sleeper in the world.

Last but not least, for the title to make sense, I consider this hotel, despite the caveats, a great option for this part of what I would call downtown Rio. Certainly not a place to stay if you wish to enjoy the real beauties of Rio.

Boa viagem!

I stayed at the new Novotel Stantos Dummont Rio de Janeiro in February. The hotel is brand new and offers a much superior experience as compared to its neighbour Ibis. I found it worth the money.

The rooms are clean and very functional with Flat LCD TVs, comfortable beds, amenities and FREE wifi internet. Staff is very efficient and attentive. Rooms are quiet and have great bathroom with excellent shower. Some rooms have view of Guanabara Bay and Chirst the Redeemer (!!!), I was lukcy to get such a room.

The hotel's location is more business friendly because it is near the domestic airport SDU in the city centre. It is perfect hotel if you need to catch a flight or arrive from SDU airport. You need a taxi or bus to reach beaches such as Ipanema/Copacabana or Zona Sul of Rio. The area in the night or weekends is quite empty. It is walking distance to Maison de France, which has cultural activities and a theater.

The negative impressions of my experience: - WiFi and LAN internet connection was not up to standards and it did not work most of my stay and when working it was extremely slow. This was a serious problem which disturbed my stay; breakfast was very modest to Brazilian standards, I was expecting more, especially when it is charged separate. Breakfast was comparable to US standards.

Otherwise, I highly recommend this hotel.

Regards.

I stayed here because I had two days crammed with meetings in Rio. The hotel is well located for the domestic airport, I arrived early and there was no issue about checking in early and heading off to my first meeting. The staff were really helpful, with very good English (sometimes an issue in Brazilian hotels). The room had a slightly bizarre bathroom but was very clean. They gym is reasonably well equipped. I had a breakfast meeting with very important potential clients at the hotel on Friday morning and the restaurant staff were really helpful and provided very good service, really looking after my guests well. I have one gripe, I was late back and needed room service. It was quite simply the worst room service meal i've ever had, just dreadful, truly inedible. I raised it the following morning when checking out and, to their credit, they immediately removed the cost from my bill.

Let's face the truth about Rio de Janeiro's hotels: most of them are literally falling into pieces (especially in the bathroom department: almost every hotel has some problem in the plumbing or in the shower).

It's not the case of the brand-new Novotel (opened 2010), where everything, from the contemporary design to the flat-screen TV-sets and obviously the lavatory bowls are in mint state.
From the square sinks to the exquisite illumination, looks like the Accor Group let a design house do anything they like. And the result is... well, cool. Very modern and stylish decoration wall-to-wall.

The rooms are clean, natty and maybe austere: nothing except the basics - which means no coffee maker, no clothes iron and no microwave oven. The bed and the collection of pillows are great.
The sound-proof windows are simply perfect: absolutely no noise from the close large avenues or the airport (but, like other Brazilian hotels, the doors let you hear everything from the hallway).

Security matters at Rio, and the hotel looks very prepared: a security guard instead of a doorman; double sliding doors in the entrance (probably also for enhanced protection); CCTV surveillance everywhere.

The breakfast maybe can be improved: the breads, the cheeses did not fit with a French chain, and overall, the breakfast buffet was below of the Brazilian average, pricewise.

Maybe one or two members of the staff was not the most warm people in Rio, but certainly is not a negative aspect, specially while the guests are looking for business: Novotel has no swimming pool, no beaches next to door, no nearby restaurants or leisure spots except a few historical buildings.

Less than 10 minutes walking from the Santos Dumont airport, close to some of the largest Brazilian corporations (Petrobras and Vale, for instance) and the financial center, Novotel is by far the best business hotel in the Rio Downtown.

This hotel is pretty new, and that could be a problem with the cab drivers, as nobody (I took at least 10 rides in three days) appears to know it.
The location is very convenient if you have business downtown, and you do not want to waste time stuck in traffic. On the other hand, if you like to be close to nice restaurants at night, please look elsewhere.
Do not even try to find decent restaurant nearby or - even worse - walking around the hotel area after 8:00 pm. The hotel has a restaurant, but I did not try it.
The rooms are quite minimalist (no coffe maker, for instance), but clean and well kept. A plus to me is the absence carpeting in the rooms, replaced by a fake wood (apparently), pleasant and obviously easier to clean.
Being a new establishment, they have stil some minor issues to fix (I got stuck outside my room because of a defective lock), but I was compensated - while waiting - with a caipininha at the bar.

Dear guest,

Thank you for presenting a description about the hotel.

Novotel Rio de Janeiro Santos Dumont is located in the financial center of the city, after the business hour, the region really don’t have many entertainment places. The hotel provides some services such as fitness center, sauna, restaurant and bar to supply this missing.

As a new hotel, we still have some items to improve, we’re glad you were compensated.

Hope to see you again in Novotel Rio de Janeiro Santos Dumont.

Kind regards,

Novotel Rio de Janeiro Santos Dumont
