Lagao guest house has been a really good experience. Easy to find, near enough to the statue, Sugar Loaf and Copocabana beach, free Wifi. Friendly and more than helpful staff who know where to go and how to get there. Beautifully clean rooms, hot showers and a satisfying breakfast (don't always find this in hostels) So good in fact that we will stay here again at the end of our trip.

We normally stayed in hotels with private bathrooms etc, but as we were nearing the end of our trip we decided to stay in a hostel due to our budget. This hostel was amazing! The staffs were incredible!! So helpful, and they speak very good English, which believe me if you don´t speak Portuguese is so useful. Paul, the cheeky chappy from London that works at reception is awesome. The rooms were clean and comfortable. We even opted for the shared bathroom as they are very clean.

We met a lot of friendly people at the hostel. It seems to attract a great bunch of people. The location is perfect; easy access to most things, buses, taxis, Copacabana, Christ the redeemer etc

All in all, a great place to stay in Rio.

Make sure you take down the Hostel's address because this place doesn't have a sign! It's extremely well located. It's in Humaita, just north of the Lagoon. It has bus stations conveniently located about a block away.
The staff is very pleasant. They help as much as they can.
It's clean. It has lots of space. The rooms have a decent size locker. The common area is nice and open, and it's nice to just lounge on the corner.
Their breakfast is good.
The only inconvenience is that their wi-fi isn't realiable! :(

We were meant to stay in this hostel for 4 nights and ended up staying for 12!! This should say everything about this hostel. The staff at this hostel and the people it attracts are so welcoming its like being at home but with the delights of Rio on your door step. Compared to the other hostels in Rio its the best value for money you can get. It has a perfect location between all attractions which makes it easy to see the sights, then chill on the beach and finish up back home for some friendly chat and food before hitting the night life! The rooms and facilities are all kept very clean and the staff are always at hand with helpful advice on where to go and what to do in the city.

I could not recommend this hostel enough to you. If we ever come back to Rio, there is no doubt we will be booking a room in here again!

My husband and I stayed here for the last 4 days of our 4 month trip around South America and our stay at Lagoa Guest house was a superb ending to our trip.

Of all the places we have stayed I have never been able to say that one place has ever ticked all the boxes... But seriously I have no complaints..

From the moment we walked in the door we was greeted with a big smile and a warm welcome.
We was shown to our room and told to relax and come and check in when we was ready!!
The breakfast buffet had everything you could wish for from cereals, toasted sandwiches and a lovely fresh fruit salad.
The rooms, bathrooms and all public areas are very clean and tidy and the lady who does the cleaning and serving of breakfast was the happiest lady I have seen in that job role ever!!
All the staff were happy to help with any query or Information we needed about anything from a good restaurant, places to visit down to all the best ways to travel and get around the city.

We was very sad to be leaving Rio, South America and the guest house and on our last night Paul (the lovely Londoner who works there) got all the guests together for a BBQ before we left.

Thank you so much to all who work there.

Lagoa Guest house has a lovely homely feel to it but at the same time they go just that little bit further to make your stay as special as in any great hotel would....

I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Rio.

Room Tip: Its a great budget hostel but also worth spending a little more on one of there lovely double rooms.

We stayed here for 6 days and found the hostal and staff to be really nice. Lagoa has a good vibe and all the staff are very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about Rio and transport on from there. The hostal does a BBQ night which is very sociable but don't expect too much food, it's more about drinking. There is also a good lounge and outside area.

Due to availability we stayed in 2 different rooms. The triple room (with shared bathroom) on the first floor was very clean and bright. It had lots of space also and we really liked the room. It wasn't too noisy and the bed was very comfortable. The shared bathrooms were all clean and the shower was pretty decent.

However, we also stayed in the ensuite double on the ground floor which is more expensive (~£70) and it was dark, the bed was on its last legs and worst of all, there was damp running up the wall which had soaked into the bedding, it was that bad! We stayed one night only then asked to be moved.

As my title suggests, I would really like to give this hostal more stars but they really need to sort the problem with the lower two double rooms.

Top tips:
1. Forte de Copacabana - Lovely spot on a nice day. Have a coffee at "Colombos" there. It's about 5 reais to get into the forte.
2. Carretao (Rua Visconde de Piraja, Ipanema. Just below the Irish pub Shennanigans). This is the best value Brazilian BBQ place. Very good. If you go, order the lamb fillet with mint jelly ("Filet de carneiro e molho de hortela"). The other best cuts of meat they bring out are "Picanha (cap of Rump), Picanha nobre(aged cap of rump), contra-filet(sirloin), filet mignon, baby-beef (veal).
3. Rio Scenarium - Lapa. A fabulous place and very famous so if you take a taxi and write down the address, he'll have no probs finding it. You need to take a copy of your passport or proof of age with you when you go there.
4. Carioca da Gema - Another famous Samba place. You can buy caipirinha's on the street for $5r also which is great value.

My room was very small but it was fine for just me, I had aircon and I was close to the bathrooms. My room was clean but unfortunately the bathroom weren't quite as clean :-( the staff at this guest house were the most helpful I have probably ever encountered, Fabio is lovely and really went out of his way to help me with everything, his English is perfect and the same goes for the other staff. The breakfast was a basic ham and cheese roll but until this place I was wondering of Brazil knew the meaning of fresh bread! It was lovely and warm and went down well. It's about a 20 min taxi ride to Ipanema but there are restaurants close by and the staff will be very happy to give you any advice or help you need.
