Fatima Macintyre House
Ranked #155 of 337 Rio de Janeiro B&B and Inns
Reviewed January 30, 2013

I was there last year in June. 4 Blocks from the beach in the very pricey and pretty Leblon neighborhood. While you share a bathroom (although you have your own toilet and sink in the room), the bathroom is spotless. Fatima is very nice and very helpful. Next time I go to Rio, I would definitely return there

This hostel is in a really great location of Leblon. Close to the best beach and many good restaurants, of all different budgets near by. There is also a good supermarket close by. Fatima is so nice, they will help organize tours and give you suggestions on where to eat. Breakfast is delicious, we had a wonderful stay here. www.FatimaMacintyreGuesthouse.com

We didn’t actually meet Fatima during our 2 night stay in her apartment, or see any other guests although we faintly heard them on occasion. A very nice girl showed us in when we arrived but we didn’t see her again either. This was partly a bit strange seeing as you are literally sleeping in Fatima’s spare room, but on the other hand we felt lucky to practically have the place to ourselves. The apartment is nicely decorated, clean, smells fantastic and our room was similar – very simple but comfortable, with a little toilet and basin in the corner behind a folding screen. The bathroom is nice too and we had no problems with sharing it. Fatima has a little dog who is incredibly well trained and other than doing a bit of barking when you first arrive he then lets you come and go without batting an eye-lid. The location is great, there are loads of restaurants nearby and bus links to tourists spots. It’s a great option, and excellent value for money compared to how expensive a hotel of the same standard would cost. It really worked for us and I would highly recommend it.

We stayed four nights at Fatima Macintyre's house. First, this is not a bed and breakfast. You can buy your own groceries and fix a breakfast and she does have small refrigerators in the rooms. The kitchen is quite small and we had to take turns in the kitchen... and in the shower as it is shared between the three guest rooms. A second complaint is that the room was not cleaned while we were there. We were not offered clean towels and our tiny waste basket was not emptied. On the positive side, it is nicely decorated and the communal spaces are kept clean. The communal space is Fatima's home and we did feel a bit intrusive. Fatima is a nice person, speaks a little English, and is helpful. She has a dog and a cat, if that is an issue. The location is very good, close to everything in Leblon, including the beach. We did appreciate being able to leave our things after checking out and return later in the day to shower and collect our things before going to the airport.

Room Tip: The rooms are not large. At least one of the rooms has a toilet and small sink.

My husband and I booked our stay with Fatima based mostly on the TripAdvisor reviews, and the place was just as great as we hoped. Her home is three blocks from the beach (about a 10-minute walk) and close to major bus lines and taxis. Plus the place is really cozy, decorated in a bohemian style with lots of books and knick-knacks. We breakfasted on the terrace one morning, which was wonderful! Our room was clean and air-conditioned, and we had a shared bathroom, which worked out fine. Fatima is also a gracious host -- she helped us find our way to the Corcovado via bus one afternoon, and she let me borrow one of her sarongs. I'd stay here again in a heartbeat. One tip: if you're allergic to cats or dogs, bring Benadryl or other medication. She has a cat and a dog.

We stayed 3 nights with Fatima, and it was fantastic. We arrived on a very early flight, and we were welcomed by her making us breakfast! She was also really helpful with tips about how to get around Rio and what things we should go and see on what days. The guesthouse is absolutely lovely, and the bed is very comfy! It´s an easy walk to the beach, which is great to swim in! And the area is very safe, we had no concerns walking around at night. There are tons of places to eat, or to grab a drink, but the guesthouse itself is nice and quiet. Would highly recommend staying here if you visit Rio!

We stayed here for 4 nights and loved it. After a long flight it was a relief to arrive somewhere that felt like home...for that's exactly what this is, Fatima's home and you are immediately welcomed. Great stuff; rooms are beautiful, giant beds, lovely clean sheets- couldn't ask for anything more. Breakfast is included (continental; cheese, ham, bread, eggs, fresh fruits etc). Fatima is very friendly and keen to help and generally a lovely woman.

Negatives are not really negatives but more personal choice - Leblon is where the guesthouse is located which is the most expensive area of Rio. We knew this before we booked however we were surprised just how expensive the area is. You won't find any rif raf in Leblon and as a girl that made me feel safe in a city that is known for its crime. You will however pay for this luxury quite heavily. Meal for two with a bottle of wine was about £50 (120 Real) and this was for one pizza between a pair on a budget. It must also be noted that Leblon is the furthest area from a lot of the 'touristy' spots so costs more in a taxi. However, public transport is great (but make sure you know the bus number before you leave. No use trying to work out the one you need at the bus stop as you will draw a blank! Trust me!).

I would recommend this guesthouse to any couples in need of a break from hostels/hotels who are in need of some rest and relaxing time.

We returned to Rio before flying home and stayed in Copacabana which is a very different experience but equally enjoyable.
