Loved my stay here and Iaci and her family were the main reason for this as everyone was so welcoming. It's a great location at the top of a hill in Gloria / Catete. Close to buses and metro and for walking into downtown and Flamengo beach. My room was nice and comfortable and there's a lovely big kitchen to cook in and chat to other guests and family members.
I travelled by myself and am in my 50s so staying somewhere friendly is important to me. If I ever return to Rio I would look to stay here

I stayed only one night with my son at this fantastic Guest House.
The lady who owns it speaks English and it was a delight from start to finish.
One Portuguese speaking lady took us to the roof to show us a 360o view of Rio - what a treat!
Her grandson and my son enjoyed each others company - a very speacial young man!
I loved the decor and the way it is restored in original charm.
In fact I loved it so much I wrote a blog just about this charming home away from home
http://exploramumourworldtrip.blogspot.com
I would recommend anyone to stay here.
The price, service and quality is 5 stars.

Room Tip: We enjoyed a room upstairs.

Baron Garden resides in a friendly, rustic colonial building. It has a small, pleasant garden and a pool (and 2 nice dogs, separated from the guests). Staff doesn't speak English (except the landlady). Location is OK, it is on a hill near Catete metro station (5-6 stations to Copacabana); with plenty of shops around Catete. Breakfast included. They have a computer with free internet.
Sleeping sometimes not easy as we had a street front room. Both people and dogs tend to be noisy there.

This is a very homy little hostel located in a quiet neighbourhood a short stroll away from the action. We slept like babies! Iacy is a wonderful host, always ready to help and a good source of information (as are also other staff and family members). Rooms are spacious, showers are warm and the place is clean. Decent breakfast with ham and cheese!

The Baron Garden was everything I'd ever want in a home away from home. Laci and her family are wonderful, generous hosts, the building is beautiful, quiet and intriguing and the neighborhood is charming and convenient. I can't say enough good things about this wonderful place, and haven't stopped recommending it to everyone. I will definitely be back!

For the following reasons, the Baron Garden proved to be the perfect accommodation for us on our first trip to Rio:
1. great location. Only a short walk to metro, buses, food, banks, etc. but in a residential area away from the noise and crowds.
2. cooking facilities. Saves money and provides an easy and welcome opportunity to interact with other guests.
3. clean (even the shared bathrooms) and comfortable.
4. fantastic owner. Iaci thoroughly and graciously answered our many questions before arrival and continued with helpful information throughout our 2-night stay. We really appreciated the way she would outline the options, then evaluate which one might be best. For example, to get from one place to another, she would tell us how to get there by walking, by public transportation, and how much a taxi would be. Then she would point out if any dangerous areas were along the route, etc. and we could decide from there. Also, since her English is fluent, it was great to be able to converse with her about life in Rio. So overall, it really felt like we were staying in the home of a friend.
5. historical property that preserves the charm of another era.

Another reviewer has mentioned the lack of screens, and this is our only suggestion for improvement.

My daughter and I started our 3 week trip here with the New year's festival and spent 5 nights here. Baron Garden is a truly welcoming Bed & Breakfast that make you feel very much at home. Our hostess Iaci was very welcoming, patient, and helpful. She speaks excellent English and was extremely helpful in assisting us to book our next stop. The staff is very friendly & helpful. The 2 dogs there are friendly & good company.

The house has many charming & historical features and is kept clean at all times: the big community kitchen, pool area, balcony & garden seating with a great view being on top of a hill were most enjoyable. Rio is hot & humid in Jan, so the pool is perfect & refreshing. The rooms do not have AC, nor bug screens at the windows, at least ours didn’t, so be prepare with bug spray or a net. It does get nice breezes.

The walk up & down the hill is a bit of a trek especially on uneven pavement & cobblestones. We found that if you exit then Inn go left, a bit UP the hill, there is a set of stairs that cuts down the middle of the hill that is much easier to navigate.

The location is great. Very close to the metro and a central plaza with shopping, restaurants, & markets. Having use of the fridge and kitchen was great as we were often too tired to go back down and up the hill just for dinner. It also gave us a chance to compare notes with other travelers. The neighborhood felt quite safe. Also, down the hill on the main street, there are always police presence here & there.

I highly recommend Baron Gardens to all.
