Pastel and Empadas are a Brazilian tradition of stuffed bread or baked pastries that comes from the Portuguese. You will find yummy Empanadas in all South American countries, but the Empada is typically Brazilian and is smaller and more of a delicacy! I love them and have had a chance to taste them in soooo many places in Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, etc.. but The Bar Urca in Rio has the best ones i have ever tried plus it has a really nice young lively atmosphere in a chilled laid back setting alongside the sea in the lovely naighbourhood of Urca. Urca is set aside from noisy, energetic Rio and is a little safe haven where you may relax at sunset next to the sea, beneath the huge Pao de Azucar. This Bar is very well known by the cariocas who often come here for a beer and a snack to sit on the wall next to the waterfront and have a relaxed chat by the sea.

The pastels come with meat and cheese, or crab, or cod, they are delicious! Bar Urca also does fried sea food plates and fishes if you ask for it.

There is also a sitting down restaurant upstairs on top of the bar which is also very good, and more expensive more elegant atmosphere.

Getting a beer and appetizers (recommend bolinho de bacalhau or pastel de camarao) then sitting at the sidewalk to a relaxed time with your friends/spouse is a guaranteed great way to spend an afternoon in Rio. Filled with locals, it provides a true carioca ambiance. Don´t expect luxury or people serving you, this is for laid back and no frills people. I didn´t wait until sunset, but everybody tells it´s a must. Upstairs there is a restaurant that I haven´t tried but comes with great recommendation as well. This bar is located at Urca neighborhood, looking at the botafogo beach.

Like Jobi, Bracarense, Braseiro da Gávea, etc. this is an authentic Rio experience. If you´re looking for a comfortable, peaceful, no-crowd bar, don´t even bother. They have excellent finger food and one of the best seaside views in Rio. It´s is crowded and no comfort, but service is fast and waiters are always smiling. So without hurry: order a few beers, pasties and fried sardines, get your spot on the wall and just enjoy it! They do have a restaurant, but the bar is unique.

Very traditional bar in one of Rio's most beautiful and traditional neighborhoods. It's a very small place, but it's ok, because most customers prefer to have a beer while eating codfish dumplings outside along the wall by the seaside. It's a place you really must go when visiting this superb city. And Bar Urca gets even better at sunset. Enjoy!
