Pastel and Empadas are a Brazilian tradition of stuffed bread or baked pastries that comes from the Portuguese. You will find yummy Empanadas in all South American countries, but the Empada is typically Brazilian and is smaller and more of a delicacy! I love them and have had a chance to taste them in soooo many places in Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, etc.. but The Bar Urca in Rio has the best ones i have ever tried plus it has a really nice young lively atmosphere in a chilled laid back setting alongside the sea in the lovely naighbourhood of Urca. Urca is set aside from noisy, energetic Rio and is a little safe haven where you may relax at sunset next to the sea, beneath the huge Pao de Azucar. This Bar is very well known by the cariocas who often come here for a beer and a snack to sit on the wall next to the waterfront and have a relaxed chat by the sea.
The pastels come with meat and cheese, or crab, or cod, they are delicious! Bar Urca also does fried sea food plates and fishes if you ask for it.
There is also a sitting down restaurant upstairs on top of the bar which is also very good, and more expensive more elegant atmosphere.
