Piratas de Ipanema
Reviewed May 14, 2012

At first glance, Piratas may not seem like much. However, don't let its looks deceive you! Piratas offers the absolute best experience you will find in Rio. To start with, location is everything. Ipanema beach is literally 1/2 block away, and Copacabana is just a few short blocks in the other direction. Piratas provides you with a bracelet for a FREE chair and umbrella on the beach (and with the Brazilian sun, you will definitely be thankful!). It is super convenient to head down to the beach at any point during the day, and then come home to shower and head out on your next adventure. The house offers fun activities every night of the week, from Beer-B-Q's and Caipirinha mix-offs, to nights out in Lapa and Favela Funk parties. Brian is probably hands-down the greatest host you will ever meet, and he will ensure you have a great time during your stay. He arranges everything and always lets you know what is on the schedule for the week. Very laid back and easy going, a great sense of humor. Though the house is not the cleanest or fanciest place you will ever stay, the point of visiting Rio is to SEE RIO, not to just hang out in the hostel for your stay. This provides you with a cheap place to sleep, so you have more money to enjoy the rest of your vacation. Besides, at the very least, it will provide you with great stories to tell to people back home, and everyone loves a great story. Another plus? Orfeo is the best dog ever, and if you give him a coconut he will be your best friend for life. Also, a little monkey sometimes frequents the property. What other hostel/hotel can say THAT?

I have stayed here twice and plan to return for the World Cup. I can't imagine staying anywhere else! If you're not afraid to have a good time, definitely stay here. You won't regret it!

This hostel is vile, dirty, unclean BUT very fun and is suitable for people who don't care about anything but having a good time. I stayed during Carnaval as it was the cheapest option. We were in a huge dorm, think it sleeps about 25 people. All the beds were wrapped in bin bags because of the bed bug infestation, however this didn't stop the bugs attacking, as two people I was with were bitten all over their body and had to receive medical attention because of it.
The location is amazing just two minutes walk from Ipanema, and the owner is friendly and a real 'character', he wants to give you an alternative view of Rio, but unfortunately he has 'alternative' attitudes to cleanliness and hygiene too.

Room Tip: Even though big room is MASSIVE choose it as the other one has no ventilation and no windows.

Worst place ever. Worst than what you can imagine.

The fact that stinks might not be too bad until you see cockroaches everywhere.

This place should be inspected by the Brazilian health department.

Pros:
- cheapest hostel in rio, 15 a night, less for hammocks/airmats or long stays.
- incredible location, three blocks from either ipanema or
- make some effort at having events, making a social environment, and the hostel is full of a colorful if motley collection of characters

Cons:
- as of Aug 11 they still have bedbugs
- very run down, a bit grotty
- fairly ghetto facilities, no real common room, apart from a small tv room
- many of the guests (particularly the brazilians) weren't friendly

I had a great time at this hostel over Carnaval until I got bitten by bed bugs and the staff didnt really help me out which was suprising seeing as they had been so good over the first week or two organising activities and drinking with us etc. Me and everyone else who got bitten by bed bugs were treated more like a burden then a guest which i didnt think was cool, as it took a few days and quite a bit of money for me to cleanse my belongings and myself of which were infested.

However, if they can solve the bed bug problem once and for all which will be a big job!! (tearing up carpet and removing the vast majority of the mattresses) i would recommend this hostel to young people who dont mind putting up with a bit of a grimy environment to have a good time and meet like minded people as it does attract a good fun crowd due to its low cost of whom i enjoyed the majority of my stay with. If they keep this hostel exactly as it is and just get rid of the bed bugs and were at least a bit sympathetic to those who got bitten my stay here would have been great. Its just the luck of the draw really.

Room Tip: good location, a few bad staff

The cheapest hostel we could find, being on a budget was Piratas. We half knew what to expect, and weren't shocked at all by the ramshackle appearance or mess. It was a great place to meet people, an even better base (being slap bang in between Ipanema and Copacabana). The guys who work there were really helpful and easy to get on with.

Stay here if you're young, like to have fun, don't care about a little mess and wanna save some money!

Bargain. Thanks Thiago, Brian et al.

Piratas is back to basics. Do not stay here if you're bothered by noise, water leaking through the ceiling or parties. But it's brilliant for meeting people, very communal and friendly and there's always something interesting going on. Bring some earplugs and be prepared not to get too much sleep! Great location, right between Ipanema and Cobacabana beaches. Supermarket, shops, bars and transport links nearby. Made some great friends in this hostel, but I wish the owners would spruce it up a bit to do it justice.
