“El mejor hostal ever”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2012

This hostal was the best choice for me and a friend to stay in Rio. Being only two girls John helped us a lot with all the must u have to know while you are in Rio de Janeiro (for example not wearing any jewellry or fancy bag). And he is very polite and cares about his guests, the first night we arrived he showed us the neighbourhood indicating which restaurants were good, which streets were fine to walk in, etc.
The room was very comfortable, very clean, there is a fan and air conditioner in the room ( a must in Rio). The kitchen is fully packaged with chocolates, fruit juice, butter, bread, herbal teas, milk and beer and you can get them without paying any extra.
John also helped us with getting a cab from the airport to the hostal and viceversa, and he has a lot of contacts if you want to do a tour.
The wining dog was no a problem for us, because it wasn't all the time, I mean you can slep perfectly and have your day without sounds. The dog only whines maybe twice a day and for a few minutes.
In one word it was perfect, I'd been in other hostels and this has been the greater one.
(I forgot to tell u that the beach is at 4 block app.)

I really wanted this to be a rave review -- but the whining dog was a small blemish on an otherwise wonderful experience.

The Rio Dolphin Inn is an opportunity to stay in a private home that is fabulously located at the intersection of Copacabana and Ipanema. John rents out two of the three bedrooms in the house. One bedroom has an internal bathroom, while the other one uses a private bathroom a few steps away in the shared upstairs hallway. (John occupies the third bedroom.)

The house is delightful. The decor is campy/kitsch, a collection of bizarro trinkets accumulated by a man with a great sense of humor and three passions: surfing, dogs, and dolphins. John himself is one of the coolest people I have ever met, a very gracious host.

It goes without saying that this is not for people seeking a luxury experience. This is a chance to stay in a quirky, colorful house that is quite comfortable and in a great location. You have the experience of being in a Rio neighborhood -- you hear the neighbors. I thought it was great to have that local flavor.

The only thing I didn't think was great was John's whining dog. Sorry, John, but you said you thought maybe it was time to put him down, and, if you want to run a guest house, it is time. For people considering the Rio Dolphin Inn, I encourage you to first write to John and ask him what the story with the whining dog is. Hopefully he will tell you that the problem has been solved, and you can head for this delightful guest house without concern.

We really appreciate this  insightful and flattering  5-star review, and thank formershrink for pointing out the dog, who we know as Genki, our aging and  faithful  Dalmation.  Putting him down as formershrink suggests might one day become an option, but since he still has a strong apetite and enjoys our company, and since it is not easy putting down a companion of 15 years,  we are committed to giving him the best life possible. We do our best to make sure he is quiet and it is only recently that he stopped walking and thus at times whines when we are not home. So by all means, if you are  put off by sounds from neighbors or animals, such as  cookouts over weekend soccer games or  birds outside your window in the morning,  perhaps the Rio Dolphin Inn is not the best place to stay. As formershrink points out, this is not a hotel, but rather a small home in a  vila, which is a compound of houses with Brazilian and foreign families, their children and pets.  It's a unique experience to stay in a vila, especially in a huge city like Rio, but that is  if you don't mind the factors--and sounds--that go along with it.

A friend recommended the Rio Dolphin Inn and it is easy to understand why. My wife and I would not consider staying anywhere else on future visits to Rio. John's hospitality is second to none and his advice based on 20 years of Rio knowledge will make your stay truly special. Upon arrival John will walk you around the neighborhood to familiarize you with the area whilst providing pointers on the immediate vicinity (like the delicious Acai at Amazonia Soul). The location of the Rio Dolphin Inn is absolutely ideal, just a few blocks from either Copacabana or Ipanema as well as the metro station. It is well worth the stay.

Room Tip: The Dolphin Room has an en suite bathroom.

We were there at the end of June. Rio Dolphin is a great/central place to stay in RIO. It's in a PRIME location--between Copacabana beach and Ipanema--it's tucked away in a QUIET street (and quiet is difficult to find in that area). The house is set back from the busy streets. The beds are super firm (a quality that is lacking in many apartments and hotels in Brazil), and the house has character. John is a GREAT host; he's laid back, HONEST, and offers a plethora of information on RIO (but not at all intrusive).
Thanks John!

I could not have a picked a better place for my solo visit to Rio. I felt perfectly at home - a lovely little retreat from the noise of the city. Fabulous location. The host was very welcoming and gave me fantastic advise on what to do with my short (2 days) stay in Rio.The 'Dolphin room' has en-suite bathroom and air-conditioning and is a perfect cosy room for couples. This place doesn't offer breakfast but it doesn't need to - there is always some nice treats to nibble on in the kitchen and there's a wealth of juice/coffee and breakfast bars down the road. I won't consider staying anywhere else when I re-visit Rio!

Room Tip: Dolphin Room is cosy and has en-suite bathroom

We stayed at Rio Dolphin over new year 2010/11, so this review comes a little late. First off, the location is awesome. You're within walking distance to both Copacabana and Ipanema and there are lots of nice restaurants in the area. Our host, John, took excellent care of us at arrival, starting off with a tour of the neighbourhood, showing us places for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We got great advice on things to do, and also what to be wary about. John is actually a fountain of knowledge regarding travelling in general and Rio in particular, there's no question that his input made our stay more memorable.

The inn itself is very cosy and there's a myriad of beach, surf and travel stuff/guides everywhere. Just sitting in the living room looking at all the stuff on the shelves is an experience.

I would recommend this Inn to anyone...:)
/Henrik

The house is located in a private gated villa which really helps cut down the sounds of the busy roads that it is located by.

You are literally 4 blocks away from Copacabana one way and 4 blocks away from Ipanema the other. Perfect location for a great price.

The owner is super nice and we will given all sorts of insider tips on where to go when, etc. It was a great home stay and we will def stay there again if we ever end up in Rio...
