“Very nice Casa in Santa Teresa”
Reviewed September 18, 2012

This is a really nice place to stay in Rio. The room was small enough but there was a very cool sitting room upstairs with a big open window which had a great view of the new part of the city. The only drawback of the place is that it is situated on a hill so there is a bit of a climb to reach it. Nonetheless, this is only a problem if you've luggage. The nearest Metro or bus is at most a 5/10 minute walk going down from the Casa, and maybe a bit more when you come back. Breakfast was very good. The area felt very safe and there were great restaurants nearby.

I stayed in this Casa for 3 nights in early May 2012. As a single female traveller it was just the right kind of place to stay. Evelina on reception spoke fluent English and was really kind and helpful. I didn't see much of Carmen or Fernando. My room was tiny and under the terrace but it was nice and clean and I got 10% discount because my AC wasn't working. It would have been fixed if I had remembered to report it and I was there over a weekend and the handy man is not on site at weekends.... I had my own shower room just along the outside corridor which was fine, but a word of warning if you are a very large person (which I am not!) - you will have a problem sitting on the toilet as it is so close to the wall...

The breakfasts were lovely and the general atmosphere of the place is really nice. Best of all was the great view from the terrace.

The restaurants are a bit of a walk away up into Santa Teresa which, as a single female, I wasn't too keen on at night when it got dark; but you've got to eat and I found I had no problems walking home.

I would return here to stay.

Room Tip: If you are a solo traveller then go for the cheapest room which is also the smallest and the only on...

We stayed a couple of days in the Casa da Carmen e do Fernando. We really enjoyed this house, its ambience and its vibe. The view is wonderful. The food is delicious.
The art on the walls is really something. There's always good music in the Casa.
Very romantic stay overall.

This house has a really nice vibe- it's clear the owners put a lot of thought into designing it. Tiny details attest to the care that went into creating the rooms and public areas. The vibe is very friendly, artsy and laid back and the other guests were of all backgrounds and ages. The house sits on a steep hill rising up into Santa Teresa, and the most remarkable thing about it to us was definitely the breathtaking views from the terrace. Our room was very small so if you can book in advance ask for one of their bigger rooms. Santa Teresa is a fascinating neighborhood and a great place to explore the rest of Rio from- it has a very different vibe from Copacabana or Ipamena, but is just a short metro ride away from all that excitement.

This was my 2nd trip to Rio and I knew from the first time that I wanted to stay in Santa Theresa. It has a less touristy more Brazilian feel to it. And within Santa Theresa this place just has a really cool aura about it. Beautiful historic home with a great view of Centro and the bay. It has a great terrace for relaxing and sipping some wine while enjoying this view, especially at night when it is beautifully lit up.

The owners were friendly but I did not see them except in the mornings at breakfast. Vivianna runs the front desk and is a delight to talk to. She was very friendly, spoke flawless English, and was very helpful in booking trips (hang gliding) and recommending restaurants. She even called several wine shops for me checking for some specific South American vineyards I was looking for.

It is also a short 10 minute walk to the Gloria subway station which is on a direct line to Ipanema (one of the cleanest subways I have seen in 6 continents by the way). Be aware that it is a steep journey uphill from the subway station if you decide to walk back though. I can recommend this B&B with 100% confidence.

Room Tip: My room was directly under the stairs and was a good size, brightly decorated, with a big comfy bed...

I was in Rio alone for a weekend and was looking for a reasonable place in Santa Teresa where I would meet other chill travelers in their late 20's-30's. I also wanted good recommendations since I prefer to follow my nose than buy guide books.

This place was perfect! Natalie, who runs the place, was so friendly and helpful recommending places to go and showing me how to get there on transit. The other travelers were fun as well. There was always a lively conversation over a great breakfast of strong coffee, fresh papaya, homemade pastries and yogurt, or by the pool at night and some of us ended up spending the day together. Lots of Brits, Germans and French when I was there. The view is spectacular and Carmen & Fernando are artists so the place is well decorated with great music playing all the time. Feels like home.

Fair warning, it's a bit of a hike up the hill and a short 10 minute walk to restaurants in Santa Teresa and Lapa. But it's worth it. I highly recommend this place.
