Hubby and I shared dinner last night at Armazem do Chopp, on a busy street near Flamengo Beach in Rio.
We're staying with one of our former exchange students, and she recommended Armazem do Chopp as a place with great food and atmosphere. We didn't get the atmosphere reference until we went inside. All the waiters are dressed as railway workers, and suspended from the ceiling is a large train set, with a train that tootles around at random intervals.
The food and service were excellent. We ordered a large shrimp risotto (about 70 reais for two) and a large mixed salad of tomato, onion and lettuce. Hubby said 'I could eat this risotto often' so I know he loved it, and will be secretly hoping tht I can find a clone recipe.
By the way, many restaurants in Rio have menu items for two—probably because no one ever eats a lone in Rio—but the menu doesn't say that's the case. It might refer to ordering a 1/2 or full serving, but the full is usually platter-sized. Be sure to ask or you'll get way too much food for one.
The place was buzzing when we were there with most tables full by 8:30pm, and a couple of large groups.
We paid just under $50 for two, without drinks. Service fee is added to the bill.
