Rio 180 is a beautiful, extremely chic boutique. I can not rave about this place enough. (Honestly, we enjoyed our stay so much that when we returned to Rio for our return flight we changed our a reservation from an Ipanema hotel so that we could stay at Rio 180 again.) The rooms are all different, and while I glimpsed one that looked rather small, the two rooms we stayed in were incredibly charming and a great size. The breakfast is great; the staff is incredibly helpful; the communal areas are beautiful. Only drawback is that sometimes it is a pain getting back at night, especially if you go out in Ipanema or Leblon. (Mainly b/c some cabs we took didn't know their way around Santa Teresa.) Overall, I highly recommend this hotel to anyone, especially young couples.

We had booked to stay 4 nights at Rio 180 but left after just 1 night and alot of stress. IMPT PTS: THE HOTEL IS NOT ANYWHERE NEAR IPANEMA, COPACABANA OR LEBLON. Despite descriptions on various booking websites, it takes at least 25 minutes to get anywhere and even longer to get back because no taxi drivers can find it!! This was our experience:
1. First taxi driver had much difficulty finding the place and driving through the area was not pleasant - it's not a place you would to get lost in.
2. Room looked ok initially but on closer inspection, it was fairly run down. Rugs were dirty and stained, towels and linen were torn and the worst thing was the shower. Water took 5 minutes to warm up to a decent temperature. This lasted for about 5 seconds before the water then became boiling hot and then back to freezing cold - all without me even touching the tap!! By this time, I already had shampoo and soap all over myself and had no choice but to continue with a freezing cold shower. My boyfriend tried to adjust the temperature without any luck and both of us endured freezing cold showers.
4. The reception then recommended a local japanese restaurant 5 minutes away and the "hotel car" would take us there. The driver stopped outside a chinese takeaway on a deserted street and told us to get out. Clearly, we refused and instead showed him our guide book and asked to be taken to Leblon, thinking it was only 10 minutes away. The driver had no idea where he was going, made no effort to look in a map and ended up driving in circles for 1.5hrs until I took out my guidebook and used the map to navigate our way to a restaurant. We got to the restaurant at 11pm.
5. After dinner, we tried to get a regular taxi back to the hotel. Firstly we were turned down by 3 drivers who said they did not know the way. Finally, 1 driver agreed to drive us and even at 1am, it took him 20 mins to get back to Santa Teresa and then a further 30 minutes to find the hotel! Despite stopping to ask 8 times for directions, it was only when we came across a fire station that they were able to point us in the right direction.
6. Next morning we checked out and made complaints about the terrible experience we had endured and made clear this hotel had totally let us down. Further to my frustration, the receptionist (who could barely speak any English) made us pay a 30% cancellation policy with great attitude and bluntly refused to call her manager saying that they don't speak English! I was absolutely furious! How can ANY decent hotel, catering to tourists and have no English speaking staff other than the extremely rude and unhelpful receptionist?
We promptly left the place and checked into Marina Palace - IT FELT LIKE HEAVEN AFTER RIO 180!!!

We stayed in the Ipanema room. Very nice room, new, clean and with a good size. The swimming pool is nice. It is a boutique hotel with just 8 rooms, so you get plenty of privacy in a romantic atmosphere. The staff is nice, the view is beautiful and the location is good. We recommend this hotel if you want to stay far from the city's major sightseeing's.

I booked through the Splendia website to stay here for a long weekend. The place has a great setting in residential hills behind Santa Teresa. It would be a fair walk to the bars and restaurants but the taxi the receptionist called for me arrived very quickly and only charged the meter rate starting at the hotel.
I arrived a little early so I enjoyed a complementary juice and snack on the terrace whilst my room was readied. Unfortunately the steep setting means there are a lot of steps to negotiate to get anywhere so, since I have some balance and mobility problems, it was just not going to work for me. The receptionist and manager were very understanding and looked after me superbly making a reservation for me at the nearby Hotel Santa Teresa; there was no suggestion of paying anything for the cancelled reservation. Splendia were equally great and refunded my deposit in full.
Although I didn’t actually stay I can say that the place is well run by truly friendly people, the rooms looked modern and comfortable, and the aromas coming from the kitchen were very encouraging that the food would be great too.

The location is beautiful. Great views. There are only a few rooms, so the hotel and the pool area are not crowded, sometimes even empty. It really feels like you own the place! The service made us feel even more at home. Polite, but not pretentious. The common areas and rooms are very tastefully furnished. The breakfast and snacks are good.
Note: Be aware that the rooms are made for couples - no door between the bedroom and the bathroom/toilets, glass windows between the bedroom and shower! We were two friends and were a bit surprised by that, but we still managed to keep our privacy!

Rio 180 is up on the hillside in the Santa Tereza area. Rio stretches out below it and Mount Corcovado is just to the right. The view is great and you get beautiful photos from here. Yes it is a taxi ride down to Ipanema or to the other areas but it is a serene place to stay. You may get alarmed when first driving up here as the area doesn't look grand but things change for the better when you step inside. Rio 180 has only 8 rooms and they treat each guest as he/she is the only one. They have a chef on staff and made us a late lunch when we arrived and dinner if we stayed in. All of the staff is very helpful. Rio 180 is the ideal hotel if you want to avoid the standard commercial hotels when in Rio.
