Firstly, the hostel staff are friendly and the front office appears fine, there is a nice terrasse and plentiful computers and wi-fi. More importantly, the actual sleeping space. They have a system off booking you in the hostel and then moving you to an apartment down the street. The apartment is in a building with no attendant or security, the rooms in the apartment are musty and the foam mattresses are damp, old and some have bugs. Very uncomfortable experience. The other 'guests' staying in the apartment are employees of the hostel, as in the hostel maid was sleeping on the couch next to the bathroom. Nothing was stolen but the lack of security at the buildings door and the constant coming-and-going of people made it seem extremely unsafe. Good luck if you have to stay here. At 70 Real/night it is overpriced for the area (most hostel dorm beds are 45 Real) and you will feel very uncomfortable.

Hi,

I normally 100% use this website to read reviews of hostels as i travel around. But after my experience in this hostel in Rio, i made sure that when i got back home...i sign up to Tripadvisor just to write a bad review for this hostel.

The service was shockingly bad, we paid 170 R$ (a hell of a lot for Rio) for a private twin apartment overlooking copa beach. So for that money...u would expect no bed bugs and friendly service from all hostel staff. This was not the case, i got into 2 major arguments with the staff and manager...here is why:

1) I was not allowed to use the internet for even 10mins after 10pm. There was no signs up saying i cant use the computer....they just make up rules as and when the like. They just told me to get off in a harsh way with no respect. After i made my point...the manager was acting very cocky with me...so i made a scene about it. He went on to tell me, he doesn't care about the fat that i was upset over not being allowed 2 send my important e-mail..and that he would rather flow hostel rules rather then help guests. lol...what a joke! so these are the kind of people you are dealing with. I met many other ppl who also had bad things to say about the staff....they are so cocky and just chase women guests..not giving a dam about your needs.

2) After getting literally bitten alive at night in the 5th floor apartment.....we checked out of the room 30mins late...and the guy said we wont get our 50R$ deposit back. so i told him in a nice way, look we didn't sleep much that night because we were 2busy killing bugs on our beds which were massive and plentiful. He had no sympathy and went on 2 say we were lying and that they have no bed bugs there. He was scared of what the owner would make of this that's why he denied it. I cant believe a body full of massive gr8 big bites was not enough proof for this clown behind reception. The guy had the cheek to say that we brought the bed bugs in from another hostel via our towels. lol. i wish i took a picture of my bed which cost £40 for the night.....bugs everywhere!

Summary:
Good Points - good location seconds from copa beach
Bad Points - bed bugs, rude and arrogant staff expensive place, not helpful to tourists, back stabbing and will take your money in a flash at every opportunity.

DO NOT STAY HERE! watch out for a guy in reception called Carlos & some manger with long hair and a beard...they are like snakes!

I stayed here at the end of January and cant complain at the hostel itself, clean, simple, good Internet access but the staff spoke barely, if any English which I thought odd in an 'international' hostel. Although i found the hostel to be a nice place not hearing any English for 4 days is not great, most importantly, there are better in this city. From what I hear I would recommend El Misti.

i dont recommend this hostel to anybody, it is very expensive, too many beds for such a small room. Staff are not firndly they only want to sell you tours etc to get your money....such a waste of our money. i will never go back to this hostel nex time in Rio.

I had great and bad experiences while staying there. I wasn't told that a zillion French tourists were staying so that I had reservations for the first 4 nights at the hostel and then for the remaining 3 nights across the street at an appartment (That was when the French people arrived). They should had said so up front.
It's very expensive for a hostel! Especially, when the appartment is considered. It's where the employees live and it's dirty and there were bathroom malfunctions.
Breakfast was great. There was a lot to choose from!
The location is great but be ready to be mugged. It's just the way it is. There's lots of security at the hostel so I felt like I was in a fortress. There many buses on that avenue and the subway is 2 streets away so I didn't need to take taxis
They have parties at the bar and at first I thought that would be a problem but I never heard any noise.
The beds are great, you can get a great night sleep.
a/c worked!
Lobby computers were fast and the internet conexion was great.
Bathroom showers didn't have hot water once but I just moved to another bathroom.
The swimmingpool smelled like chemicals. I felt it wasn't safe to bathe!
TV area is confortable and a great place to chill.
I never used the kitchen, partly because it was very small.

Most of the people from the staff are awesome. Especially Ricardo. They helped me solve a problem with the airline and a broken suitcase which is not their job and I really appreciated that since I don't speak the language.

We stayed in the "apartment" six block away from the hostel and had to walk up and down to have breakfast and to checkout. There was no hot water, but well, you don't need ho water in Summer. There were holes in the bed-sheets and in the curtains, which is still ok if the room is not very pricey. But it was expensive! And there were cockroaches in the toliet. For the same price we stayed in a lovely bed and breakfast in Santa Tereza.
