Books hostel may not be high up the Tripadvisor rankings but it's one of those big 'word of mouth' hostels.

I asked a load of people met on my travels which hostel to stay in when in Rio. A good half of them said 'BOOKS!!' (emphasis theirs).

So where to begin..........It's an excellent hostel overall. I had a good time

- The staff are really good and friendly (real friendly, not fake!). The manager/owner is a great guy and all the staff are top. They will let you print things out like boarding passes free of charge. They let me print out a 14 page document and I had to insist on getting them to take some money for the service - any other place would charge $1R a page.

- It's a sociable hostel. It's always busy with people but isn't too crazy. Everyone drifts off into lapa at about midnight and the place becomes quiet. It can still get noisy because the street is lively so being ear plugs.

- I was in a 6 bed dorm which was spacious. Plenty of space for 6 people and it didn't feel at all cramped. It had both a street facing balcony and an interior balcony facing.

- Beds were comfortable. Memory foam pillows - a nice bonus.

- Place was kept very clean

- Internet was FAST. You could actually watch youtube videos.

- Good breakfast

So what's not to like? Comfy, sociable, hot showers, god wifi. All boxes checked, a good experience.

Books is a great, friendly hostel located near the party zone of Rio. It is a quick walk from the hostel to catch a bus to the beaches. It's less expensive to stay in Lapa than Copacabana and Ipanema, and there is far more to do. The arches, cathedral and mosaic steps are all within walking distance. Everyone in Books is very friendly--especially the staff. The only thing I'd change is the smoking in the common area. Aside from that, this place is perfect.

Room Tip: If you have a window that opens to the foyer, the smoke might bother you.

Ok- so it may not be the beach, but this place has a lot of charm and its really well located by the action in Lapa. Staff is greaaat!!!! Especially crazy Felipe- (bring hats) and Alex!!
Breakfast is good- and the atmosphere alone is well worth the stay-
Great value!!

If you are going to stay here make sure you get air conditioning. My room didn't have it and it was impossible to sleep - the one fan in room did nothing and I was covered in sweat constantly. Does have a good atmosphere and u can bring your own drinks in so has its pluses. Long way from beach though and lack of showers might mean you are waiting a while to get ready in the morning.
