Gula-Gula is a chain of restaurants in Rio de Janeiro where you can always count on delicious, if mildly expensive food. My favorite is the one in Leblon, on Rita Ludolf Street. The ambiance is charming, with modern furniture in a well-lit room, the service is impeccable and the food is superb. Last time I went there I had a light lunch which consisted of an apricot quiche that was simply divine!! That, however, is only an example, as the menu is quite varied, with international dishes as well as the local fare, be it meat, fish, or poultry. Brazilian inventiveness when it comes to food never ceases to amaze me. Different ingredients are mixed together in one dish, like the quiche above (who would have thought of mixing eggs and apricots?) and the concoction is fantastic!! For a good sample of Rio cuisine, go to Gula-Gula, possibly the one near Leblon beach.

If you want authentic Brazilan food while in Rio You have to try one of the many Gula Gula Restaurants. The prices are average for Rio but a little steep for visiting Americans But the food is very good

With various options on the menu, there are a chain of Gula-Gula restaurants in Rio. All the menus are standard in the chain, and the food is usually well-balanced between salads and beef, chicken or fish. I have lunch at Gula-Gula quite often since there is one just beside where I work.

We just had a sunday's lunch at this restaurant. After a 30 minutes waiting for a table we had another 30 minutes waiting for the water. I asked four times if the water was ready. The appetizers arrived mistaken, but the main course was fine. No we are waiting, a little long, for coffe and tea. Prices are a littlhe high for this kind of food. Perhaps its better try the other one just a few metters on the Rio Desing Shopping. It less charming that this beutifull old house, but you will have better service.
