“Old school charm..”
Reviewed September 16, 2013

Beautiful old cafe with numerous cakes and sweets. We had lunch here, reasonably easy to find. Spectacular old furnishing including, massive period mirrors, which oozes old school extravagance. Wait and front of staff are friendly. Try and avoid the crowds by going before lunch or late afternoon. Worth visiting. Recommended. We found the food to be high quality and were very full upon leaving..

“Touristic and yet traditional and very popular among the locals in Rio”
Reviewed September 12, 2013

Very traditional, this place was inaugurated in 1894 by Portuguese immigrants. It preserves its art nouveau style exactly as it was more than 100 years ago.

Although it is one of those must see places for tourists visiting Rio and, as such is full of them, it is still very much celebrated by the locals, that like the tradition to go there for a light lunch or a tea in the afternoon after going for shopping in the old center Rio.

I went there with other 12 people and we stay in the ground area because it was full. It seems that the best spots are in the mezzanine where also you can chose for a buffet or a la Carte.

Service is not great, but good enough. The snacks are delicious and they are what in Brazil we use to call “family size”, meaning really big for a snack. To have an idea, I ordered cod fish little cakes and they have more than double size normally served in other restaurants and bars. This is to say that a couple of snacks can well be quite a lunch. I would suggest to have a look at the snacks in the glass display at the entrance before ordering them.

It is advisable to make reservations, especially if going with a group of people and/or in the rush hours.

Never fails to impress. Went for a quick sandwich in between meetings in Rio Branco Avenue. It really does feel as if you have stepped back in time. Food is decent, coffee is great and the service impeccable.

“Great for breakfast and lunch”
Reviewed September 7, 2013

The confeitaria in the Forte de Copacabana has one of the most impressive views in the city, i recommend it even for just coffee or a caipirinha!!! I've gone for breakfast and lunch and both are really good :)

“A must see in Rio de Janeiro”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

I can't remember what the food was like, but just being in Rio's Cafe Colombo is a great experience. One of the greatest places I have ever been. With a little imagination you can see yourself sitting there a century ago, amongst the grands-seigneurs of the era, the well-to-do. The space, the mirrors, the woodwork ... cafe Colombo is a sort of time capsule. Go there.

(The form of this page forces me to pick a month of the last year for my visit, but I visited the place years and years ago. I suppose it's still the same. Some things should never change.)
