Neighborhood: Ipanema
Description: The first "Carioca" version of Gero opened in 2002 and follows in the successful footsteps of its sister restaurant in São Paulo. Awarded top prizes in the city's main culinary and news magazines, the menu is based on Italian recipes passed down through generations, such as baked lamb with potatoes and small artichokes and ravioli stuffed with veal and mushroom sauce. Designed by Aurelio Martinez Flores, Gero Rio brings the same minimalistic and laid-back ambience to Rio de Janeiro. In a few months, the restaurant became a staple in the city nightlife scene, a mecca for the town's many musicians, artists and personalities.

“Great Italian in Ipanema”
Reviewed August 9, 2013

This italian restaurant in Rio will never disappoint . Great service in a friendly atmosphere, italian cuisine taken to high carioca levels. Consistently good, I have been there a few times, on business, and both service and food are a good break from a chaotic city. Everything is well organised, from the moment you walk in you can surrender yourself to gastronomic and visual pleasure. A few meters away from the beach, where you can go and walk after the delightful experience of eating here. A not to miss place in Rio. The locals who know - and can - confirm it.

“Nice and cosy.”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

The restaurante has good plates, a nice wines, but the price is on the high side, it is more expensive than the same Gero in Brasília, as amazing as it may seem.

“Rio's Elite Meet”
Reviewed July 23, 2013

This is where Rio's elite, meet. There is a reason for this. This is Rio's most professionally managed restaurant. Good top to bottom. Service, food, atmosphere.

Service is outstanding, the food and room are above average. The wait staff is incredibly professional and consistent. I have been at this restaurant dozens of times and they have always been outstanding. They are so good that they have become a training ground for other top restaurants in Rio. I have seen many of the former employees of Gero in other restaurants.

The food is good. Often able to order off the menu without a problem. A classic lunch favorite is the Penne Magali.

The room is pleasant, but the real attraction is the crowd. Very successful and upscale. Great people watching place, particularly if you are a local. You are more apt to meet up with a neighbor in Gero than in you own building.

Dont confuse this Gero with the Gero in Barra. Two totally different restaurants and vibes. The Barra location is a poor imitation of the original in Ipanema.

Was this helpful? let me know. Thanks.

“Acceptable”
Reviewed July 12, 2013

Gero was recommended by the concierge at our Hotel. We arrived at 8:30pm and the restaurant was starting to fill up. The food was fine (not outstanding), the wine list of reasonable length. The staff were attentive. Unlike others, we have no complaints.

“Quality has it's price...”
Reviewed July 1, 2013 via mobile

Reading the previous reviews, I have only one thing to say: If you can't afford to play in this league, condidder going elswhere! - This place is clean, safe, hip and the staff is very attentive... Bothered by the fact that a bottle of Ornellaia costs USD 950? Yes, me too, but you are in South America, drink an Argentian Malbec for USD 130 and enjoy the truffles risotto ;)
