Description: The first "Carioca" version of Gero opened in 2002 and follows in the successful footsteps of its sister restaurant in São Paulo. Awarded top prizes in the city's main culinary and news magazines, the menu is based on Italian recipes passed down through generations, such as baked lamb with potatoes and small artichokes and ravioli stuffed with veal and mushroom sauce. Designed by Aurelio Martinez Flores, Gero Rio brings the same minimalistic and laid-back ambience to Rio de Janeiro. In a few months, the restaurant became a staple in the city nightlife scene, a mecca for the town's many musicians, artists and personalities.

Gero was recommended by the concierge at our Hotel. We arrived at 8:30pm and the restaurant was starting to fill up. The food was fine (not outstanding), the wine list of reasonable length. The staff were attentive. Unlike others, we have no complaints.

Reading the previous reviews, I have only one thing to say: If you can't afford to play in this league, condidder going elswhere! - This place is clean, safe, hip and the staff is very attentive... Bothered by the fact that a bottle of Ornellaia costs USD 950? Yes, me too, but you are in South America, drink an Argentian Malbec for USD 130 and enjoy the truffles risotto ;)

We decided to try out this highly acclaimed Italian restaurant, and walked in without needing a booking. What struck me immediately was the lack of atmosphere and there was a warmth missing from the room.
The waiters were very attentive, but the food was crazily priced and the wines were all HUGELY marked up... By about 6-700%!
I had risotto with duck, apple and green pepper, which was delicious. My husband opted for veal ravioli. We chose a "cheap" bottle of wine, and had a dessert each, and the bill was over $200. I don't mind paying this kind of money for a meal, but as long as it includes a decent bottle of wine, starters and coffee as well!
The atmosphere was dull: filled with business men, no music, and too many waiters. The restrooms were also a disappointment: no luxury amenities one normally expects from a restaurant of this cost.

I am a foodie. I will pay big bucks for exceptional food and feel joyous about the experience.

Gero, however, was a LOT of money for average, uninspired food in a loud setting. There was nothing to marvel over....except the bill.

Entrees are approximately $45 -$55 and uninteresting. We were a large group and each had a salad, entree, wine and split desserts. The bill was $150 US each.

And it didn't help that there was a kid with an iPad set on LOUD playing games in the chair that rubbed backs with mine.

This is apparently one of Rio's current hot spots attracting a mixture of nouveau riche and business people (the loud expense account crowd). Very attractive decor -- not overstated. Professional service albeit not particularly warm to guests unknown by the management. Almost empty at 8:00 PM, the parade started at 9:00PM and it was packed with a rather flashy and not very attractive crowd for the rest of the evening.. The good news is that the food was superb including tuna carpacio, ravioli filled with burratta and porcini, osso bucco with safron risotto and a (non-menu item) slowed cooked shoulder of lamb that was delicious. Prices are very high for the food and even higher for the wines. However the food made it all worthwhile.
