“nicest place we stayed in brazil”
Reviewed February 12, 2010

It's boring to repeat what everyone else has said but I will anyway. This really was the lovliest place we stayed in our 3 weeks in brazil. David and Jimena are so welcoming and David always took the time to check we were ok, if we needed any help with our plans for the next day and always happy to offer advice of how to get to places. Breakfast was lovely but unfortunately this meant that every breakfast after pousada guarana was a bit dissapointing. Lovely fruit, yummy cinnamon bananas, really nice bread. We stayed 5 nights and it felt like you could have a bit of variety with breakfast each morning. Everywhere else was a bit of fruit and a cheese and ham sandwich...for 2 and a halfweeks! We really liked the room and was surprised Loney Planet rate it as basic. All rooms in this price range are basic in that you get a bed, fridge, tv and bathroom, but our room in pousada guarana was nice in a rustic way with nice homely touches. Pool and breakfast area is really nice, and we also spent a fair amount of time in the hammocks. It's good to have that space out of your room, especially if it's raining, which we found it often was. Location was a way away, but I wouldn't have wanted to stay right in old town, too busy (although we were there in peak season). We didn't mind the walk except sometimes when it was bucketing down I wished we were a few steps from a restaurant. We never felt unsafe walking home and the good thing is there are a couple of restaurants sort of halfway to town if you weren't in the mood for the full walk in. As you may have gathered, highly recommended.

Pousada Guarana is a very special place. The owners David and Jimena are absolutely fantastic, and together with the staff this is the friendliest pousada we've ever experienced! As soon as we stepped inside, we felt like a part of the 'Guarana family'. David gave us a map with loads of tips of what to do and things to see, and there were bikes that we could use at all times. The breakfast was really great as well, with lots of homemade bread, cakes and loads of lush fruits. David was even so sweet that he gave us a lift to the city center when we were leaving!!! And the best thing is, you get all this and more for the same price as a poor downtown hostel!!! Thanks ever so much for a great stay, we will definitely come back when in Paraty!

Pousada Guarana was a pleasure to stay at. The service provided by the staff was incredible, especially given the price level of this hotel. Everyone on the staff is very friendly, but just as important, very helpful. No matter what you need, it seems the sole goal of the hotel is to make sure they assist you and take care of your needs. The only negatives - far from downtown (1.5km, compensated by free bike rentals), and a little too much muzak is on tap at the pool. No matter - this pousada is highly recommended.

I went to Parati with my mom. We're from Brazil, but we've never been there, and I must say that we were just lucky to have choosen such a wonderful place to spend our time.
The owners, David and Jimena and all the staff were very carefull with us. It seens that they won't take a rest till they make you fell welcome and well assisted!
Another positive point, in my opinion was the decoration and the gardens with lots of tropical and coloured flowers and plants, and the owner's pets are also very lovely and friendly. What to say about the breakfast? Well, I'm speechless... This place is a burst of life and good energies!
Due to my proffesion I've been traveling regularly around Brazil and tried many different and expensive hotels, but for the very first time I haven't felt just like "another guest" in a patterned place.
I wish I could have stayed more time. Incredible!

David & Jimena are wonderful hosts & their staff all go out of their way to make your staywith them perfect. The Pousda is at the edge of the town, but it is a pleasant 20 minute walkor an easy 7 min bike ride into town- the Pousada has bikes to lend you! This is a wonderful laid back corner of the world- which is decorated with art & lovely homely touches. There is a chill out area by the pool with sofas &hammocks, in addition if you decide to have an evening in, then there are numerous dvds to borrow from the library as well as books to read. Breakfasts are wonderful & plentiful with home baked breads &cakes too- yum yum! There is also tea &coffee available all day.

You've probably read a ton of reviews about this place already; and, frankly, this is the first time I've been compelled to write a review on Trip Advisor given the incredible experience we had here. The owners are not only the nicest hotel/pousada owner's you'll ever meet, they are truly some of the most genuinely kind, hospitable, friendly, warm people you will meet ANYWHERE in the world. David and Jimena are mind readers. They are so passionate about ensuring that their guests have the very best experience at their pousada, and also in Paraty. They know all the hidden gems, from tiny beach front restaurants in little coves just outside of town, to the best jeep and boat tours in town. When you meet David and Jimena, you just feel like you're old friends and you will not want to leave. We were originally set to stay in Paraty for three nights, but ended up staying for five nights!

OH, then there's the amazing breakfasts. You'll probably come across many breakfast spreads in Brazil, with eggs, bread, cheese, fresh fruit, juice, coffee, etc. But, at Pousada Guarana they have the BEST eggs in South America (light, fluffy, with fresh herbs). And, there's always something freshly baked - banana bread, zucchini bread, chocolate cake, etc. Yes, I said "chocolate cake"! On the final morning of our stay, I had planned on teasing David about not having chocolate cake for breakfast. Well, as was often the case, he must have been reading my mind because sure enough, there was chocolate cake (and not just any old, dry, day old chocolate cake, but one your grandma would be proud of).

The rooms at the Pousada are spectacularly clean, there's a huge DVD collection should the rains move in, a super cute pool surrounded by cushioned benches and hammocks.

And, all of this, for a price far below any of the absolute garbage hotels you've stayed at in Rio or elsewhere in Brazil (you know the ones - where you pay $150 USD/night, expecting something more than a stinky old, moldy shoe-box that you'd be embarrassed to show your mother).

Bottom line: don't waste your time searching for another Pousada in Paraty. Stay at Pousada Guarana. Don't worry about the cheap taxi rides to town (or, the 20 minute walk...it's a lovely stroll anyway, and you need the exercise!).

Why this Pousada is not the TOP recommendation, or even listed in Lonely Planet simply goes to show that the folks at LP publish recommendations based on whoever gives them a free room, or a bottle of whiskey, etc. But then, hopefully, you've already figured that out.

I stayed here in Oct. of 2009 with my parents. We couldn't have picked a more ideal spot. The pousada's location on the edge of town was surprisingly perfect. Paraty is very small and safe and, hence, proved to be great for walking day or night to and from the historical center. Taxis are also an option and are quite cheap. The pousada itself is peaceful, tropical, clean, and beautifully decorated (pictures online don't capture the detail). The owners, Jimena and David, really make this place what it is. They are a delightful Brazilian/American couple truly invested in providing their guests with a great experience. They have excellent suggestions about what to do in Paraty rain or shine. The next time I'm in Paraty, I will insist upon staying at Pousada Guarana.
