We used Paraty Tours to go from GIG to Paraty, then to the Ilha Grande ferry and then back to Rio. The driver was timely and good. We felt safe with his driving skills and it was worth the extra we paid not to have to worry about transfers and getting to the right location. He also allowed us to stop for refreshments and a restroom break. I think we did get overcharged for the ferry - our driver directed us to a guide to buy our ticket and we paid twice what everyone else was paying. For what we paid for the transportation, we shouldn't have had this happen.

We also did the Schooner trip with them. Thank goodness it was off season and we took the early boat. It looked like this could have been very unpleasant at times with the number of boats that follow the same route and arrived at the same time.

Staff at the main office was very helpful with other issues.

Thank Gracers

We booked a 5 hour trip on a schooner which included lunch, two islands and two beaches. The boat was clean and not crowded, lots of places to sit and enjoy the scenery. The staff was friendly and some spoke English. The office staff was also helpful and friendly. We stopped at two beaches and saw plenty of fish at one island, snorkeling was available. We visited in June and had fantastic weather. I would definitely recommend this tour and this tour company for your enjoyment in and around Paraty.

While in Paraty, booked four tours with them (schooner, city tour, jeep tour and kayaking excursion). All were enjoyable and as promised. They were responsive to our requests.

We rented bikes for a couple of hours from Paraty Tours. The price was R$9 per hour up to a max of R$45 for the day. As there were 3 of us we negotiated a 10% discount on the fee. The bikes were really new and in great condition, they provided helmets & locks for us to use and recommended places for us to cycle to. Overall a great experience, I'd recommend using them.

I used Paraty Tours for transfer from/to GIG and Paraty, and for a boat tour of the bay. I had no problems and all went well and on time. But although they do speak English and respond promptly to email (in English), keep in mind it is not their first language, and misunderstandings (both ways) happen. Some of my colleagues were befuddled by their back-and-forth booking procedure, consisting of a request, then a "confirmation" that is really a request for deposit, and then a final booking that confirms the deposit is received and paid. For the airport transfer, they require a minimum of two passengers, but even if you are two, they may hold you to meet additional passengers, so expect an hour or two before you actually set off for Paraty. Since most flights from the U.S. arrive in the morning, and you can't check in to a pousada until afternoon, that is generally not a big deal. If you are in a hurry or on a tight schedule, you just landed in the wrong country.

As for the boat tour, I was in a large group and didn't do the booking, but the boat and tour went fine, no hitches, and was pleasant enough.
