We booked a transfer with Paraty Tours from Rio to Angra dos Reis and back to Rio.

We booked through their English website and assumed that we were getting a service that could operate in English because we do not speak Portuguese or Spanish. This turned out not to be the case

Upon arrival at Rio airport there was a representative who spoke very little English who told us to sit in the cafe because we needed to wait for other passengers from another flight. We waited for 45 minutes, the passengers arrived and then we were told that we have to wait for another 30 minutes because the bus was stuck in traffic (surly there is traffic everyday in Rio and should have been accounted for?)

After 45 minutes with no additional information (1.5 hours total wait) we went looking for the representative who seemed to be deliberately avoiding the increasingly irate passengers. When we found her she was unable to explain anything to us and it was only thanks to one of the other passengers who spoke english that we were able to understand what was going on.

After over 2 hours of waiting, Paraty Tours sent a mini bus for us that could not fit all the passengers in. Luckily we got on but I have no idea what happened to those passengers that didn't!

For the return leg we were supposed to be contacted the day before with the pickup time. We were not contacted and instead we had to call Paraty tours and get the pickup information from the operator who spoke practically no English.

We were picked up, driven 5 minutes down the road to the port where we then sat in the van for over 1 hour waiting for others passengers!

We paid R$480 for a very poorly organized transfer that left us angry and late. I strongly advise other transfer options.

The only positive that I can give for the whole experience was that both drivers that we had very extremely friendly and were good drivers.

We live in a mid sized city (Vancouver, BC) and are used to getting around by bike. We are aged 63 and 65 respectively. In Rio we only saw cyclists on the bike paths and I was not tempted to ride in Rio traffic but in Paraty that is how the locals get around. The distances are just about right. The traffic not bad and there are a number off separated bike/pedestrian lanes.
We were staying at Bamboo Bambu which is a 20-30 minute walk from the old town. It is a pleasant walk mostly along the river, but on a bike it is 5-10 minutes. This saved us so much time on our weekend visit. Ben from Bamboo Bambu took us in to Paraty Tours that rents bikes and translated for us. I don't think that this is really necessary but it was helpful. Most folks rent by the hour but we wanted bikes for the whole time. The charged us $100 USD. After day 1 (a strenuous ride to the falls) my husband found both tires were flat. They gave him a different bike. The also provide helmets, locks and lights. You have to tell them what you want.
When we paid on our way out, he asked for a discount due to the flat tire and the took 10% off the bill. We also bought our puppet show tickets at the Paraty Tours office.
