“One of the best views you'll ever see, a great stroll and no one else around!”
Reviewed February 27, 2010

This was a fantastic day out starting off with an energetic but not overly-long hike to the fjord (apparently you can even see whales there if you are lucky!), then along the beach front until we took a quick boat ride across the fjord and climbed the sugarloaf peak with time for a quick swim on the way! Nothing I could say can really prepare you for the view from the top. You emerge from the thick forest and pick your way to the treeless rocky summit where you are greeted by a panorama that takes in a glorious combination of narrow spits of forest-clad land fringed by beaches separated by the azure sea. Tiny islands and far-off shores add further magic to a view that repays the effort of the climb a hundred-fold.

Paddy and Rodrigo are the guides and they combine the energy, experience and expertise on local history and ecology necessary to complete the package. Perfect.

“well worth the climb!”
Reviewed September 16, 2009

If you want a bit more of an energetic way of seeing some of the area around Paraty and also like to get away from the crowds, this is hike is great fun and well worth the steep climb to the peak. In fact the whole day was a great way to see some secluded homesteads, visit some quiet beaches and feel surrounded by wildlife (more flaura than fauna)..... let alone the great view from the top of the sugar loaf peak where we had our lunch. Added to the pristine scenery and challenge of pulling yourself up the slopes on ropes, was the fun company of our guide, Mike aka Paddy from Paraty Explorer (google them, they don`t have an office), who gave us a good explanation of the local geography and flora and fauna, while also ensuring we make it safely up .... and down from the peak. All in all a superb day out and you can certainly reward yourself with a few caiprinias after returning home.

I did this hike earlier in the year - including about a 3 hour hike in followed by a short boat ride across the bay, then the hike up sugarloaf, and then the return journey, slightly different route on the way back. Incredible. Just stunning. Great hike through the forests with those lush dark green huge trees. Then the view from the top, across multiple bays. 360 degrees. You just want to scream (I seem to recall I did). Take a small picnic up there so that you can spend 30 mins enjoying the view and taking it all in. And a camera. The last bit of the hike up the mountain involves grabbing hold of trees to pull yourself up. Not actually that hard but great fun.

I really recommend it highly. It was the best hike I did the whole week I was there. Led by these two guys from Paraty Explorer. Actually spent all week hiking and kayaking with them. Paddy and Rodrigo. Highly recommend them too. Great fun guys and really experienced. Take you at your own rate. Enjoy it for me.

“Breathtaking..you feel like the King of the world!(Well..Queen..!)”

A real highlight of my trip! Excellent guides who are fun and inspiring and a wondeful hike. Climbing ropes, pulling yourself up through trees, sun poking through the wonderful lush forest..back to nature.. then you get your reward at the top. The view is incredible.. the fjords, the peaks, the air as you peruse the world.. lost for words!
And Paraty is one of my favourite places in the world. Ended up changes plans to stay longer in this quaint, cobbled stoned, atmospheric fishing village...
