“Quaint, comfortable, but how safe?”
Reviewed December 30, 2012

Stayed here for 2 nights. Nice room, nice breakfasts, free internet. Main issue was one which someone else raised, about safety. The main door was open, and often reception would be empty. On several occasions, when I was on the computer in the reception area (using the internet), people would just wander in and sit by the desk, or sometimes go through to the back. I had no idea if these people were guests, or friends of the owners, or what. So it felt a bit unsafe in that regard.

I'm not sure about the hot water, I can't remember, but I have a feeling it wasn't that hot.

The small rooms pack the beds in with a double and bunk beds in each room - tight for four people with bags. The rooms are on two floors surrounding a courtyard with a plunge pool (a bit murky!). Although the room I was in didn't have a/c I believe it was available in some. A hearty breakfast is served in the courtyard. The location is great - just minutes from the historic centre.

We stayed at Marendaz for three nights in July 2012.
The location is very nice, really close to the colonial centre (and everything else because Paraty is such a tiny town).

From outside the place is absolutely lovely! The two storey building has white walls decorated with dark wood and there are flowers everywhere in the courtyard. Jacuzzi was closed but looked lovely. The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed.

Our room was more ascetic. It was so small we had to move the bed to be able to open the suitcase. The fluorescent tube made everything look ugly. At the night the room got cold and to be honest the blankets were really gross. We wondered have they ever been washed and avoided touching them. I also found a spider in our bed (didn’t tell my husband who is arachnophobic) but I guess you can’t avoid all bugs in pousada-like places. The bathroom was ok. We had hot water in the shower and cold in the tap. Wi-Fi worked very well in the evenings but not at all during the day.

One thing that did bother us was that there was absolutely no soundproofing. The town itself is quiet, but the dog barking in the neighboring house for several hours during the night almost drove us crazy. I know it’s not Marendaz’s fault their neighbors have an annoying dog but still. In the mornings a group of American 20-yearl-olds shouting in the breakfast area woke us up.

Breakfast was fine. It was not as good as people have told in the previous comments - either they changed it or all the good stuff was gone when we got to the breakfast, which was about 15 minutes before it ended. 2-3 different fruits, bread, ham, butter, juice and coffee.

The staff was friendly but only one of them spoke English. We also had a feeling the owners (apparently three sisters) make their not-always-so-interested teenagers to take tourists to places. It was kind of weird - a teenage girl met us at the bus station, asked us to follow, switched on her iPod and walked two meters in front of us. Same happened with another girl who was supposed to take us to a place where our boat trip started. They weren’t rude, just typical teenagers who aren’t exactly delighted to waste their time with tourists.

Paraty is a small and relatively safe town, but there were some safety issues. First, the reception was often empty. It would be really easy just to walk in, take a key from the hook and continue straight to the rooms. Secondly, the window facing the street didn’t close. Thirdly, one time we got back the room was cleaned and the door was left open! We were quite shocked because all our valuables where in the room and there was no safety deposit box.

I stayed in this pousada because of a Gadventures trip Iguazu Falls, Im not a picky person, but Im into having the basic things, and hot water is one of them and then also, there was not water at all, not even to flush the toilette, super uncomfortable.

The place was close to everything and clean, but we suffered water problems throughout our stay (ie. no water for showering ever), the place was hot as hell and I found that just about anyone could just walk into the place unchallenged. If you have to stay there, avoid the rooms right near the entrance. They are on the same water supply as the laundry and hence never have water. Staff seemed more interested in surfing the internet than assisting customers. Breakfast was nice, and did have some variety. Coffee was actually very good, which is rare in Brazil hostels.

Room Tip: Stay away from rooms near entrance.

This hotel is in a terrific location, really close to the colonial centre. The rooms are very basic and cluttered with too much furniture which was dated and we didn't like the fact that the reception was left unmanned with the keys left on a hook so that anyone off the street can walk in and help themselves to the keys and so we ended up carrying our key around with us everywhere. The staff were very friendly and sweet to us and the breakfasts which were included were nice and set us up for the day with lots of fresh fruit available. There was a hot tub which we didn't try out and there was a lovely courtyard, albeit small with a seating area and lots of pretty plants which created a lovely feel. Upstairs was a tv area with comfortable sofas and lots of antique furniture which gave the place character. This place was ok and fine if you are staying for 1 or 2 nights
