We found this hotel while looking for a place to stay in Rio during the Carnaval. All of the hotels in Rio were outrageously expensive, and the Icarai Praia Hotel looked very reasonable in comparison. The obvious drawback is that you have to spend time getting to and from Rio. There are options though. In addition to taxi (around 100 Reals to Copacabana), there is a bus to Copacabana/Ipanema that passes right by the hotel every 20 minutes (6 Reals), and takes 45 minutes to get there, and there is also a ferry boat across the bay that will take you to Lapa - you will enjoy the view during your sail. The rooms are nice and clean, the hotel staff is friendly and helpful. Breakfast is fine. This is not a 5-star hotel, but still is a good choice. The location - Icarai Beach in Niteroi, is pleasant. You could get tanned or go for a stroll at Icarai beach, but do not count on swimming there - it is the inner bay and the water could be not as clean as one would wish. The neighbourhood is very safe, with nice restaurants nearby.

The big selling point of this hotel is the location, a block away from a relatively underused beach and a block in the opposite direction from a good shopping street. It's a fair way from the ferries, though, and you should reckon on $60 for the taxi from the airport unless you want to explore the non-trivial challenge of finding a bus to get you there (neither the information desk or anyone else I asked there could tell me). Similarly, going to Rio from there is an expedition best accomplished by taxi, and I wouldn't really recommend it if that's where your business is.

The room is comfortable (and in my case had a spare bed) with a slightly spartan shower arrangement (fixed jet, just step under it). The staff varied in helpfulness and knowledge of English but were in general pretty good. The breakfast was average - Continental with local juices and some bits of bacon and scrambled egg. I didn't eat other meals in the hotel as there's a vast choice of inexpensive restaurants nearby. Curious waterpipe noise, presumably whenever anyone flushes their toilets, but as another poster has said, shut the bathroom door and you won't notice.

Overall perfectly adequate, and according to other conference delegates a cut above some other very downmarket Niteroi hotels.

Niteroi hotels are fully booked most of the time, so it's always a tough job to find a place to stay. Icarai Praia provided me and my family a nice and comfortable stay. although a bit pricy. The staff is very helpful and friendly. The hotel is in an excellent location, mostly residential, half a block from Icarai beach and a few blocks from nice stores and restaurants. Breakfast is included in the price.

Room Tip: Front rooms are noisier but have a better view

This hotel is situated in a very good location, close to Icarai beach, shops, coffee shops and a number of restaurant. I really enjoyed walking around as everything is close. I booked through internet using email. I was answered instantly with price estimate and then confirmation. I was not asked for credit card details.

The staff are kind and polite. The breakfast was good but I did not use the restaurant for other meals. On the last day, there was a leakage in the toilet so I informed the reception at evening. The receptionist apologized and mentioned that a plumber was not available at that time and he could only come on the following day. The good thing, the receptionist offered me to change the room if I felt un comfortable but I preferred to stay in the same room. A bar soap was provided in the toilet. Keep your toilet door closed as most of the sounds travel through the toilet. Once closed it is OK. The room was fine with a safe. If you need to exchange money in the hotel, you better do it in the morning because I wanted to exchnage in the evening but I was advised to do it in the morning.

I stopover in the Icarai Praia Hotel.
It was a grateful surprise !
Located in a street close to the Icarai beach (50 meters); in the other street (Rua Coronel Moreira Cesar) has an excellent shoppings.
60 apartments, conditional air, safe, mini-bar, telephone, tv, internet, bar, restaurant, parking for car.
The price is correct for a city like Niteroi.
You can pay with some credit cards.
It has excellent breakfast. It is between the best ones that I know.
The restaurant serves lunch and dinner until 10PM.
There are two computers in the lobby, if you need internet.
Make reserve.
Many executives pass the weekend in the hotel.
The reception staff is very nice.
