Owner description: Perched on a cliff above a beach, this striking, flyer-saucer-like building houses contemporary art and enjoys splendid views across the bay.

This is the most special and finest art museum I've been to. The building is shaped as an UFO, and inside there is art and views of the fine beaches on Niteroy. When we were there in October there was an exhibition of women who were affected by cancer, but was enjoyed proud over their bodies! Several of the pictures and the stories touched me! So this art museum I recommend visiting if you have one week in Rio.
My and friends were there quite late, and got us a very nice sunset from the art museum!

I went here 7 years ago and it was gorgeous. There were a lot of interesting artefacts inside, but the actual architecture of the building was one of the biggest highlights. Very cool, with a lovely view.

Interesting architecture and views. Not sure if going inside is worth it, but just hanging around outside and admiring this UFO looking buildng was good enough for us,

MAC museum is about 40min. away from Rio, by crossing Rio-Niterói bridge. Situated in an amazing location the museum was projected by Oscar Niemeyer and inaugurated in 1996. Its unique arquitecture makes it an exceptional attraction for those who enjoy art. Inside there is a permanent contemporanean art exhibition and a couple other temporary exhibitions that are ok, but nothing really special... The best thing in the museum is its building and the outside view. Below it, there is also a really nice restaurant/cafe for lunch, dinner etc.

Art exhibition was very poor and had a very bad taste. It appears that MAC stands for 'Museu de Arte Comunista' (Museum for Communist Art) and yet it was the most expensive museum we visited while in Rio and Niteroi (go figure).
Outside however we enjoyed an outstanding view of Pao de Açucar (Sugarloaf mountain) and other peaks in Rio, Guanabara bay and even a submarine entering the bay.
Walk down the sidewalk to the left (when exiting the museum) and visit a small bridge connecting to a military facility, it's a very good photo spot for taking pictures of Rio and of the museum building.
