Gruta de Santo Antônio is a family-run Portuguese restaurant that combines the traditional excellence brought by the founder, Dona Henriqueta, with experimentations of the kitchen of the future, in equal quality standards, lead by her son, Alexandre. It may easily be said that this combination results not only in the best Portuguese restaurant in Brazil, but the best restaurant in Brazil, period. Chef Alexandre’s creations are far from what one would call “nouvelle cousine”, rather his style shows profound respect for tradition and his focus is on absolute quality and innovative techniques. If you want to experiment the best of Portuguese tradition, choose a classic from the menu. If you want to embark into the kitchen of the future, let Dona Henriqueta and Alexandre surprise you.

I you ever stop by in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, do not miss Gruta de Santo Antonio restaurant : this is a Portuguese food restaurant, hosted by the old lady owner, who greats you at the entrance. Start with grilled sardines or bacalhau( cod ) cake . The main course should be bacalhau in its many alternatives ( Gomes de Sá, às natas ou da casa) . Opt for a portuguese w hite wine. Dessert : pasteis de Belém and a superb expresso. Simply do not miss it !

This must be the best Portuguese food out of Portugal. Everything is cooked to perfection. The cod fish, particularly is to die for! No wonder it is one of the most famous and awarded restaurants in the Rio de Janeiro area.

Not mentioning the place´s atmosphere and wonderful welcoming we have from all staff and from the Captains of the Ship - Chef Henriquetta, Chef Alexandre Henriques and Elssa. They are lovely people and make sure the clients are happy and assisted.

Went there for my birthday, hope to go back again for other celebrations!

Living in Rio de Janeiro, I always heard "cariocas" talking about "Gruta de Santo Antônio" and its great Portuguese cuisine. Located in Niterói, on the other side of the Guanabara Bay, it is not very easily reached without some planning. Last May, finally, I experienced this hidden gem of Portuguese gastronomy in Niterói! Ms. Henriqueta Henriques, a lovely lady, and her family honor, for over 40 years, the Portuguese tradition of superb cuisine. A classic restaurant, with gentle service and generous portions (that may be easily shared by two or three guests) complete the scene. Codfish ("bacalhau", in Portuguese) and seafood are the high lights of "Gruta de Santo Antônio", sided by Portuguese top wines. We (four guests) had "Bolinhos de Bacalhau", as starters, and shared, as main course, "Bacalhau à Espanhola" and "Arroz de Camarão" (a shrimp risotto). Portuguese sweets, as desserts, are strongly recommended. Unforgettable! Bon Appétit!

Cod fish was the best I had in life. Cooked with perfection! Ask for the “Chefs cod fish” and you will taste what I’m talking about!
