“Villa Pedra Mar-velous!!!”
Reviewed April 1, 2012

If you look at the photos of this amazing retreat and your first instinct is disbelief, "It can't be as beautiful, luxurious or perfect"...you are mistaken. Villa Pedra Mar is one of those rare places that exceeds expectations.
We spend a week in Rio during Carnival and were looking for a respite from the craziness of the celebrations and crowds. A three hour drive and a ferry ride across the bay delivered us to the private dock, where Jo, Sari, Riann and Karien greeted us with genuine warmth and welcome.
Our room was lovely, decorated with a soft relaxing scheme, interesting artwork and local Brazilian "Granado" amenities. Enormous windows framed a glamorous view of the bay, and emphasized the natural beauty of Ilha Grande. The bed was comfortable and prepared with soft bamboo sheets.
As guests we felt incredibly looked after. Jo and Sari were able to assist us with suggestions for activities and places to stop that suited our energy level and mood. We took a long walk to Praia Grande through the Atlantic Rainforest listening to the sounds of the forest. Another day Jo arranged for us to take a boat for the afternoon where we enjoyed sightseeing, swimming and snorkeling in some of the more secluded coves.
We spent our days hiking, swimming, snorkeling, or just lounging on the dock. Afterwards we would relax before dinner enjoying one of Jo's famous caipirinha cocktails.
Breakfast and dinner were included during our stay and the cuisine was thoughtfully created with our preferences considered. My husband especially enjoyed a lasagna prepared by Sari, while another evening Riann’s preparation of the locally caught calamari was so delicious that I may never be able to order calamari again. None will ever compare to that meal! Dining on the rooftop or the terrace, where you can see every star in the Southern Hemisphere while listening to the ocean are what we dream when we dream of Brazil.
In the midst of pristine beauty there is a haven of luxury waiting for you at Villa Pedra Mar.
Go.

Get here quick before it is impossible to book a room!! This retreat is the epitome of a hidden gem - literally as you can only get here by boat once a day, and physically as the property has only 3 rooms and so only a limited number of guests can share in this hidden treasure. Inevitably this amazing place will be the number one resort on tripadvisor next year (simply because it deserves to be).

However after a few days with the South African hosts, Jo and Sarie and their beautiful family you feel they will always find a way to accommodate you when you want to return. We spent a month in Brazil and Argentina staying at some of their most fabulous hotels and resorts - but we left our heart in Vila Pedra Mar. Whilst one has to agree with previous reviews about the excellent quality of homemade food, crisp linens, and impeccable service, there is something else here that one can't convey in words. A real sense of belonging, of coming home even though you have never been there before, of feeling at peace with yourself even if you don't have a religion - it really is that special!

Don't worry if you aren't on honeymoon, this place will encourage you to find someone just so that you can come back on honeymoon - and if not - don't worry - its always great to indulge yourself! Try it and you won't be disappointed!

Room Tip: The honeymoon suite as many have said is fabulous, however all three rooms are great. we stayed on...

Vila Pedra Mar is the only place I've ever stayed (8-12 January 2012) that far exceeded expectations.
The sheer luxury of the accommodation is totally fabulous (those beds, that linen, those towels, those views!), the hosts – Jo, Sarie, Riann and Karien (and Daniel) – incredibly gracious and warm, the food wonderful and the setting sublime. We booked four nights and were lucky enough to be able to upgrade to the honeymoon suite after our first night. It was more than worth every cent. As lovely as the other rooms are, this one is truly special. In retrospect, we should have booked a week!
The perfection of the setting is amazing. A lovely beach right next door and a private jetty on which to sunbathe or chill out or swim, snorkel or canoe from. For those wanting more activity, there are hikes through a glorious rainforest, and a not-too-difficult forest walk to other beaches and some restaurants, but do take some good shoes to do that in. There are boat taxis to get you back after a few G&Ts.
Apart from the stay being too short, the only other negative was the rain. We would love to go back in a better weather season.
We were unaware until we reached Rio that our Vila Pedra Mar hosts were fellow South Africans. It makes me incredibly proud to be able to say that our very own offered us the best stay we had in distant Brazil. Baie, baie dankie Jo en Sarie!

I'm one who usually thinks that reviews (either good or bad) are exaggerated, but I have to say that, after spending 5 nights at Vila Pedra Mar, the reviews don't come close to indicating how great this place is. There are several reasons why we will never forget our trip to the Vila:

1. Location and Accomodations - The Vila is situated right on the water next to a small, quiet beach named Praia Vermelha on the western side of Ilha Grande. Ilha Grande itself is a tropical paradise, but Praia Vermelha and some of the other nearby beaches are very beautiful, private sanctuaries in this paradise. We spent all afternoon at a nearby beach on a Saturday in high season without seeing or hearing another person. We spent all 5 of our nights in the honeymoon suite and, although I never saw the other rooms in the Vila, I can tell you that it left nothing to be desired. The room is quite large and has fantastic views of the water from two separate porches. It has a walk-in shower with plenty of hot water, a spring-fed pool, an HDTV with satellite service, and a very comfortable bed. It is undoubtedly the best room on the island and was by far the nicest place we stayed in Brazil.

2. Hospitality - Even though the place itself is spectacular, we owe the majority of our memorable experience to Sarie, Jo, Riann and Karien (and Daniel too, of course). They are a loving and gracious family and really made us feel like a part of it while we were there. They all helped us plan our daily activities and provided great recommendations about what to do and where to eat. Riann did most of the cooking and the food was really top notch. He served us a delicious breakfast every morning and a different salad, entree and dessert every night. If you can, see if he can make you the calamari, which is freshly caught in Praia Vermelha. It is delicious! I could go on and on, but suffice it to say that they obviously really care about their guests and that contributes to a unique and special experience.

3. Activities - Since the Vila is not within walking distance of the main town on the island (Abraao), I was worried when I booked the place that there might not be enough to do. After 4 days of hiking, canoing, boat rides, and snorkeling though, I wished I had booked it for the entire week. There is plenty to do and the place is unbelievable, so I would recommend booking here for as long as you can.

If you are going to Ilha Grande, the Vila is a must-book, but even if you aren't sure whether or not you want to go to Ilha Grande, Vila Pedra Mar is reason enough to go.

Room Tip: The Honeymoon suite is amazing!

Believe all the reviews - this is a really special place. ...It was the last stop on our honeymoon and the perfect end to the trip. We thought we had arrived in paradise when we were shown to the honeymoon suite. Definitely worth staying in this room if you can although the other two rooms looked v nice too. However, the honeymoon suite has 2 balconies which does make it very special. Pretty nice to sit on your balcony and have a 'sun downer', looking out to the ocean.
The owners Sarie and Jo were so helpful - it's home from home. They sorted out various trips around the island for us - nothing was too much trouble. They even arranged for some later guests to bring the Ipod we had left behind back to London for us!
Breakfast and dinner is included in the price so it does make the rate really good value. Food was incredible (Sarie and her son are great chefs!)

Would love to go back one day...

Room Tip: Get the honeymoon suite if you can

We feel fortunate to have been able to stay at Vila Pedra Mar while we were on Ilha Grande. The place is amazing; beautiful rooms with views over the beach, great snorkeling out the front and some nice walks nearby. The closest to paradise we have ever experienced. The fact that the Vila is not in the main town makes the experience even more relaxing.

One thing to keep in mind when considering Vila Pedra Mar is that breakfast and dinners are included, and the meals cooked by Sarie and Riann were some of the best we have ever tasted. Dinner is a 3 course meal that would rival any restaurant. So the fact that this was included in the price made Vila Pedra Mar great value for us as well. The Luxury Suite was R$550 per night for our stay and given we have paid R$250 for inferior dinners than what we had here, the price for Pedra Mar is very reasonable vs anything else we considered.

Sarie and Jo are amazing hosts making the stay all the more enjoyable. They have created a very special place that thankfully for us they are willing to share with others.

Room Tip: The Honeymoon Suite for an extra R$125 looked amazing; unfortunately it was booked for our stay. But...

Trust the reviews; this is the best place we have ever stayed. The Villa is even more beautiful than the pictures show. We were so warmly received by our host, they helped us plan our days on the island and gave us great suggestions. The food was fantastic and the views absolutely breathtaking. I’m trying not to sound like a broken record with the reviews that are already on this page, but you will not be disappointed. We went here for our honeymoon and it was paradise. There is no other pousada on the island that will give you the privacy, luxury and comfort of this one. Stay at least three or four days, we stayed six nights and we could have stayed more. We wish the best of luck to our host who felt more like good friends with whom to share good laughs. We will never forget our time there and hope to go back.

Room Tip: Both rooms are great but it's worth it to splurge on the honeymoon suite.
