“Perfect end to our honeymoon”
Reviewed August 17, 2011

My new wife and I have just returned from a honeymnoon of a lifetime and Villa Pedra Mar was the icing on the cake. We had just come from Casa brancas in Buzios which was a beuatiful and luxurious hotel. I booked Pedra mar because of its location and and because it looked to be the best place on the island, I didn't hope or expect that it could compete with Casa Brancas as they are totally different types of hotel. However, it was far better than my high expectations and we fell in love with the place.
It offers the perfect mix of adventure and luxury. Short (or long) walks though the rain forest allowed us to discover beautiful isolated and unspoit beaches. The snorkling directly off the villas private jetty was superb and kept us entertained for hours.
The vila itself is stunning, the top floor is the bar/kitchen/chill out area and has the most fantastic views. Our room was perfect, a balcony to watch the sunset, huge bed which allwed us to wake up to a crystal clear ocean.
Sarie and Jo were our hosts and made the place even more special. We ate beautiful food courrtesy of Sarie, drank, laughed and felt very very wlecome. Jo fired up the roof top bbq when he saw my eyes light up at the suggestion of it.
If you are going to Ilha Grande and want to do it in the best possible style then this is the place to go.

Room Tip: Get the room with the balcony (there is only one so book well in advance)

I will start out by saying that we wish we had stayed more than the two nights. Ilha Grande found its perfect hosts in the form of Sarie and Jo. Their love for Ilha Grande and enthusiasm for entertaining makes Vila Pedra Mar the perfect respite in all of Brazil (in our humble opinion). S&J made all the arrangements on our behalf from airport pickup to the boat transfer from Angra into Praia Vermelha, Ilha Grande. Jo met up with us at Angra. It was a 2.5 hour ride from Rio's Intl airport and then another hour-long boat ride into Vermelha. It is situated in a sleepy village away from the hustle and bustle and the clustered pousadas of Abraao. Their attention to detail is evident from the get go: art, luxurious, discerning touches, incredible views, well appointed rooms. We were lulled to sleep each night by the soporific effects of waves crashing on the rock below. Sleep was further facilitated on a comfortable bed covered with high-grade linens. The views from the room are fantastic of a changeling sea and the nearby beach with all its interesting activities- diving lessons, rousing game of football. The views can be enjoyed from the terrace with offers panoramic views of the sea, village, and the distant mainland. It is the perfect spot for reading or relaxing, watching the sunset, stargazing- enjoyed it all with Sarie's caipirinhas. The piece de resistance of the whole experience was Sarie's food. After my initial experience with her homemade-from scratch culinary delights, I waited in anticipation with mixed emotions for my next encounter with them. We knew that this was not to be repeated ever again for the remainder of our travels through Brazil. She more than rose to the occasion and accommodated our dietary restrictions with yummy zucchini soup, curried stew over fragrant jasmine rice, parmesan vegetable frites...desserts that were lip smacking good accompanied with an excellent bottle of wine from Jo's selection. Breakfast with its many and delicious choices left us happily satiated till the early evening hours.

Based on S&J's suggestions we took a hike through the forest into the secluded beaches and the nearby village. It was a 45 minute hike (hiking shoes/sandals recommended especially, after the rains) that opened into a beautiful, pristine beach of Aracatiba with a path leading up to the village and the main beach. Then there is the nearby hidden, serene and picturesque Itaguacu beach where one can spend hours undisturbed. These were just few of the many gems of Ilha Grande that we partook in and hope to return to enjoy its main offerings of course while being pampered at Vila Pedra Mar.

We thank them for sharing their experience and themselves in such an open, warm, and inviting manner and for their tremendous hospitality. We highly recommend a stay at Vila Pedra Mar and hope that you do yourself a favor and book at the very least 3-4 days in this piece of paradise.

We stayed three nights at Vila Pedra Mar in June and have nothing but praise for this lovely villa, its surroundings and of course Sarie and Jo, the proud owners of this small piece of paradise. If you are looking for unspoilt beauty and a luxurious hideaway this is your place. The rooms are beautifully decorated and have stunning sea views. The food is exceptional and Sarie and Jo are the best hosts one could ever ask for. We will undoubtedly return to Vila Pedra Mar, as soon as we possibly can!

When you look at the villa sitting in front of lush rainforest it is quite a view, and when you step inside it gets even better. Beautiful furnishings throughout the house. And for the first time on an island visit, a shower with actual hot water and fabulous water pressure! The bed is blissful and I really could've stayed in it all week..really.. I could've. This utter laziness would've been tragic though because I would've missed all the fantastic meals (muitos kudos to Sarie,Christiaan, and Junino) prepared for me during the week. I also would've missed the company of Sarie and Jo. As a solo traveler they did nothing but make me feel at home. Sarie did an excellent job laying the groundwork of my stay through email contact prior to my arrival making sure my needs would be taken care of. Unfortunately Sarie had to leave after my first day, however Jo was the perfect host and was there to provide an ear or entertain me at dinner. It was also great to have breakfast and see hummingbirds and just looking out into the sky and sea below.

As for the villa position itself, you can hear the waves crashing against the rocks below. If the sea is rocky it sounds tumultuous, but you get used to it. There is a little dock that you can go down some stairs and sunbathe on or swim right off of when the sea is calm. Behind the villa is a path through the rainforest you can take to get to the other beaches. The nearest one is a 5 to 10 minute walk and then there is another one (Aracatiba?) that will take a bit longer..I did it in about 30 to 40 minutes walking briskly. They are both beautiful but the one that takes a bit longer belongs on a postcard. Even further is a larger village with an even larger beach. On both of these I had the beaches to myself aside from the odd passerby. It goes without saying that the path is well worn, but not paved and is hilly at times so if you have mobility trouble I wouldn't try it. There are taxiboats that can take you to different beaches as well, but I never tried these.

They also have wifi in the dining area and television in the rooms if you feel the need to plug in. This is not what you'll remember when you leave. Most likely you'll think about Vila Pedra Mar...the room, the stars, the beaches, the food, the wine, good conversation, and your speedy return.

Where to even begin. We can't express how much we loved this place. everything was perfect. The owners, jo and sarie ensured the most perfect stay, their attention to detail was amazing.

we stayed at vila pedra mar for 4 nights. this was not enough! i think 7 days here would have been perfect. we expected to have little to do- how wrong were we! from snorkelling out the front of the villa where we saw turtles and a spotted eagle ray to watching hummingbirds whilst hiking through the rainforest at the back of the villa. we made it to aventueiro, one of the worlds most beautiful beaches. the vila is within easy reach of many incredible beaches. sarie and jo are extremely helpful in arranging local guides and boats to the beaches.

sarie cooked our meal each evening. the food was amazing. she was very considerate to our culinary needs (i dont eat seafood) and each dish was amazing. it really felt as though sarie loved to spoil us.

this place really is a little piece of paradise. the perfect getwaway for much needed R & R. Sarie kindly showed us the honeymoon suite which was exceptional, I'd highly recommend this place for a truly special honeymoon. the bamboo sheets really were unbelievably comfortable.

we both hope to make it back to stay at vila pedra mar!

Praia Vermelha is a wonderful location on Ilha Grande (Big Island), away from the main town of Vila de Abraão (opposite side of the island), and with wonderful views of the mountain-ringed mainland. Vila Pedra Mar is beautifully perched above the tiny bay with its colorful fishing boats. The owners of Vila Pedra Mar will go out of their way to cater to all your wishes. The small hotel (three rooms) has a friendly bed and breakfast atmosphere, is spotlessly clean and offers a crucial service-- reasonably priced snacks and drinks, since the village of Praia Vermelha is somewhat isolated (no store). Again, the views and the swimming right off the dock are just great. The owners can arrange transfers to and from the mainland (recommended) and the the famous beaches such as Aventureiro. We left feeling that we couldn't have done better than Vila Pedra Mar.

Me and my husband spent 5 nights at Vila Pedra Mar in the beginning of December 2010 and had an amazing time! We have travelled quite a lot around the world and stayed at a number of very nice hotels but this place is really one of a kind!! The feeling of luxury and hospitality goes beyond what can be put down in a few lines. We stayed in the honeymoon suite where everything from the fabulous views from the two balconies to the interior design left nothing to be wanted. The surroundings are amazing with a very tranquil atmosphere. The lovely owners of the hotel made everything in their power to make our stay extraordinary, which among other things meant taking us hiking in the jungle, showed us the best place for snorkeling with turtles and well as served us superb three course dinners every evening and fabulous breakfasts in the mornings. All in all, this is for sure the most praiseworthy hotel we have ever stayed at!
