The hosts here could not make you feel more welcome, obvioulsy caring very much that you enjoy your stay on the island. As for the island it is magic, we only had three nights to spare for this part of our trip to Brazil, a few more days 4/5 nights would of been perfect. The location of the Pousada is set up on the hillside, our room had views of the bay, very beautiful... If you like atmosphere, market style food/drink stalls, lantens, live music, bit of festivity then you might like to try for something closer to town. To be honest I was torn about whether I would prefer to be in town or at the Naturalia. One of my fondest memeories was a "caprihina induced meander" back to our Pousada after a night in town...full moon, stream to cross that we forgot about... If you are Western Australian and you like Rotto, have some cash in your pocket, this is a trip well worth doing...

Fab views from the rooms which are very basic. Rooms are small, perfectly clean but if you're expecting other than very basic then you'll be disappointed. Also found the rooms very noisy - we had a room on the ground floor & when the people in the room above were getting up in the mornings we could hear every footstep...bad for a light sleeper like me!

We had a problem with a terrible smell in our room for the first night but when we spoke to one of the lads they sorted it out that evening (apparently it was something to do with the humidity that was making the wood smell of pee!) and the owner checked with us at breakfast that it was ok. They couldn't have dealt with the issue any better in fairness to them.

I think if I was going again I'd chose a pousada on the beach but that isn't to say that the Naturalia wasn't good!

On Ilha Grande, you have to choose between "cheap" rooms and "expensive" ones. We had already decided to stay at the Pousada Naturalia when we arrived but we got dissapointed when, at our arrival, some people on the island offered us to stay at their place in a double room for 30 or 50 R$ per night!! when pousada naturalia and others are 130R$ or more. Anyway we kept to our plan and were not deceived in the end.
This pousada is wonderful. Ilha Grande is amazing and the pousada naturalia makes it even better. On a hill, above a beach and in wild nature, with a view on coconuts and boats, you feel like in a dream. The room we had, on the first floor, had a terrasse with a hamac. The bathroom was clean and had very hot water. The only thing I did not enjoy was the bed, too smooth for my back after a day walking. The breakfast was huge, with every tropical fruit you can desire, juices, cakes, meat, cheese... And last but not least, the owner and their assistants are LOVELY! They speak French, English, Portuguese, Spanish (and maybe more) and are always available to give advice on things to do. There is always someone at the pousada so you can come back at any time.
If you need a unique "natural" experience in a paradisiac island, go there, you won't be disappointed.

I should start off by explaining that my wife & I have been on the road, traveling across South America / the Caribbean for the last four months, and have travelled extensively over the last decade and a half (my wife and I met while traveling over seven years ago). Needless to say we’ve stayed at many places, and this ranks among the best.

The bed & breakfast was built by the owner, Laurent, and blends perfectly into the natural surroundings while offering modern amenities. It is spotlessly clean, each room has a wonderful balcony, and the feeling / vibe / “karma” of the place is close to perfect.

The breakfast area was beautifully built among the rocks and the trees, protected from above, but open at the sides, with hummingbirds darting in and out. Paradise. The breakfast itself is phenomenal, with more fresh fruits than once could imagine, cheeses, meats, etc. Fresh food is brought out throughout the breakfast, which means that if you like to get up a little later you are still guaranteed the full spread (no need to “beat the rush” in order to feel sated).

However, more than anything else, it’s the personal touch of the owner, Laurent, that stands out. It started when he responded to our email asking about availability and rates, when his prompt response not only answered our questions, but also included a plethora of information about the various options to get to the island (ferrys, catamarans, different ports of embarkation, exact departure times, etc.) as well as suggestions as to what to see on the island, beaches to visit, essential items to bring, etc. And it continued when we arrived. Laurent makes each guest feel welcome, moving between breakfast tables in the morning to spend time with each family / guest. Small things like having a large umbrella for every room at reception (tropical downpours in the afternoon are common). And then large things, like using his personal credit card to book flights on our behalf on a local Brazilian airline that would only accept domestic credit cards (which, in addition, required him to sit on the internet with us for close to an hour to go though all the various verification procedures).

We should also add that internet on this island is scarce, expensive, and slow (it comes by satellite from the mainland, and is affected by weather). His free wireless connection is faster than that at the local internet cafes, and of course free.

A fantastic experience. Ilha Grande is a wonderful place, and Pousada Naturalia is a wonderful residence. We hope to visit again.

Pousada Naturalia was our favorite out of all the places we stayed while traveling in the State of Rio (out of 2 other pousadas and 2 hotels). The balcony in our room with its amazing view overlooking the ocean and rainforest, and adorable hammock, was our favorite aspect of the room. The downstairs breakfast area is also gorgeous with fresh avocado, guava, orange, passionfruit juice and hummingbirds buzzing around the beautiful flowers. Laurent was an amazing host, speaking 4 or 5 languages and always offering helpful tips on what to see on the island. What we were most impressed with was that he let us leave our bags there when our transportation was delayed, despite the fact that we had stayed the previous night at a different pousada. You couldn't find a kinder host. And all of this at such an inexpensive rate!
