“Great place to stay in Ilha Grande”
Reviewed February 4, 2012

We stayed in Pousada Naturalia the week of 16th to 21st of January 2012. We were greeted by Laurent who showed us to our room. It was small but everything was there, the bathroom was great and the view was amazing. During our stay in Pousada Naturalia we were very well treated and any help we needed we got. We were going to Sao Paulo after Ilha Grande and Isabel kindly booked our tickets over the telephone for us as we couldn't do it in any of the travel offices.
Overall it's a great place, to make it better would be only to improve the Wi-Fi reception in the rooms.

Pousada Naturalia is situated at one end of the bay on the edge of the main village of Abraao. It is a few steps back from the beach and 5 minutes walk along the beach into the village centre and to the main ferry piers. You can swim at the Abraao beach but there is a lot of boating activity in the bay so it is better to take a short walk to some of the other beaches just along the bay. There are also other beaches further afield, including the famous Lopes Mendes, which can be reached by walking trails or by boat trips.
Although it has other pousadas close by the layout of the buildings, which are set in beautiful tropical gardens, makes if feel very quiet and private. A lot of attention to detail has gone into the whole design of rooms, gardens and breakfast area, giving a lovely harmonious feel to the place. Every room has a balcony with hammock and a sea view. The gardens are home to hummingbirds and tanagers (and frogs, who were heard but not seen on our visit!).
The owners are Laurent Tran and his wife Isabel. They are very helpful and friendly and most willing to provide information on activities, walking trails, restaurants etc. We were let down at the last minute by our travel company and Laurent very kindly arranged our transfers from Rio airport by taxi and boat out to Ilha Grande. Between them the hosts speak several languages (Portuguese, English, French and German) so communication with guests was good. WiFi is available free in the breakfast area but we couldn't get a signal in our room. However, the breakfast area is a lovely place to sit and relax so this is no hardship. The breakfast was good with a selection of fresh tropical fruits (e.g. melon, mango, custard apple, star fruit) and juices with breads, cold meats and cheeses and good coffee. We would recommend this Pousada.

We really enjoyed our stay at Pousada Naturalia. The room we stayed in had the most amazing view over the bay. The room was air-conned and had decorated in a stylish manner. Each balcony had a hammock which was great. The location of the Pousada is perfect, close to the main town, but far enough from the noise. The breakfast here was one of the most generous with loads of fresh fruit and juices, fresh baked breads and cakes as well as cold meats and cheeses. Every day they would have something 'classic' Brazilian to sample, which I thought was a very nice touch. Lauren the owner was always on had to help with trip planning or general assistance. Both our cards were blocked and we did not have enough to pay for our stay! They did not bat an eyelid to say we can do a deposit into their account once we got back to a big city. We stayed for a week and could easily have stayed for a month.
The place have been designed so you feel like you are totally isolated in a tropical forest with a sea view.
Great place to stay!

Room Tip: We had room 9 and had three beds and an excellent view. hardly any noise as well.

I have rarely been so thrilled about a hotel/pousada stay. Everything was just amazing during our stay at Naturalia. Great hosts, good fresh homemade breakfast, great rooms (we had balcony), perfect view over the sea, and very close to the city as well.

After being a few times to Ilha Grande, I can easily say that Pousada Naturalia is my favourite place to stay. I would absolutely stay here again.

We booked this Pousada through Imagine Latin America. We got the boat over and then were met by Waldeck, our guide at the dock. Someone took our luggage and Waldeck walked us to the Pousada.

The first afternoon we were there, Waldeck took us on a short walk/tour to the prison near the town, along the black beach and back again. He was born and bred on the island and was very passionate about it – I can see why! It’s beautiful. Total paradise. The next day we went on our excursion. A boat trip to a beach the other side of the island. Then we walked for about 30 mins to Lopez Mendez. The beach was beautiful and although all the people were there off the boat, it was really empty as it’s so long. We walked right the way along the beach to a spot near the rocks where we did some snorkling.

The next day we decided to take a 5k walk to a waterfall on the island. Yan from the Pousada was great and would come over and chat at breakfast and ask about our plans for the day. He mentioned to us there was a boat we could get back from a beach near the waterfall. We didn’t realise quite how difficult the walk would be. It was apparently only about 5k but it was up and over hills and it was sooo hot! We were very glad to finally reach the waterfall and even more glad we knew about the boat home!

Yan and all the staff at the Pousada were great. It’s a beautiful place to stay – the Pousada and island in general. The Caipirinah’s are fantastic and we had some lovely meals. Especially at Lua Mar, recommended by Waldeck. There's lots of lovely restaurants and bars right on the beach.

Room Tip: We had a room with a partial sea view which was great to look out over after a hard day's sunbat...

We stayed there for 3 nights..only. This place has a fantastic location, people who manage this place are amazing- friendly and incredibly helpful! views from the rooms are brilliant- a bit of forest and ocean with hammock! you can truly relax and unwind. Breakfasts are really good, buffet is made out of everything for everyone! fresh juices are the best!Rooms are clean and decent sized. They had few power outrage but the whole island had so this is something that can happen . Overall I would definitely recommend it to anyone! worth every real paid!

The first thing you will notice when you get to the "pousada" is the wonderful greenery all around. The place is located almost in the middle of the rainforest, yet only a short walk away from the village. The original trees and rocks from the place have been integrated to the building in a very charming way - the reception (where you will also have breakfast) is an attraction on its own. VERY beautiful.

And then there are the owners, French guys Ian and Laurent - they are very welcoming and extremely attentive. Both will do their best to help you choose the best activities for the day on the island. They can and will tell everything you need to know to make the most of your visit.

Rooms are simple, but very clean, comfortable and nicely decorated. There are no TVs (which should be no surprise, for there is a note about this on their website), but who comes to Ilha Grande to stay indoors and watch TV anyway?

Breakfast is also very good, including plenty of tropical fruit (expect to find anything includind sweetsops, guavas and even jackfruit).

A very pleasant stay, at fair rates.
