We stayed at this Pousada for 8 nights in January. I am an airline pilot so I travel for a living. This is one of my favorite places that I have ever stayed. A beautiful Pousada with an incredible view, meticulously maintained, and very friendly staff and owners. The owner Ricardo is a great host and makes you feel like you are part of his family. The breakfast is great, and the rooms are very clean and comfortable. On a scale of 1-10 I would rate this place as an 11. We will definitely return, this will be our only place to stay in Buzios for years to come.

Room Tip: Bring comfortable walking shoes if you don't bring a car. It is not far from the beach but the...

Like most others, we enjoyed our our week. Buzios is a great place, and like other such resorts, there is a wide range of accomodations from quite basic to uber luxe. This hotel is moderately priced for Buzios, you get a great view of the bay from atop a hill, a nice sized pool, a very warm, personable staff, especially Ricardo the owner who speakes English and Spanish and Italian if you don't speak Portugeuse. The rooms are a bit small, basic, but did you come to Buzios for sun, beach and milieu, or to spend time in room? Similarly, there is a breakfest, but not a 20' buffet with 30 selections. All in all we recommend the place highly, but note 2 caveats. It is up on a hill, reached from another hill so be prepared for some uphill walking. Secondly, taxi service is not reliable, but that is not the fault of the hotel. Enjoy Buzios.

Room Tip: Spend a little more, get the sea view rooms on second floor

We found this place ourselves and went personally to book as we were loving Buzios so much that we changed our plans and needed two extra nights! As we were travelling with a teenager we needed a bit of space for us all. In the previous hotel we were cramped but here we had basically joining rooms and were much more comfortable. The staff, were friendly and helpful. Breakfast simple but good enough. Loved the location and its fabulous views. It has a real guest house feel about the place and a lovely touch is the chess board out in the lobby area. Great pool with awesome views. Clean and well cared for. The only wierd thing was the locking of the doors all through the day. We always had to ring the bell to get the door opened. Maybe they should give guests that key too. Loved the place though and Buzious itself is not to be missed if you are staying in Rio take the time and go there!

Room Tip: All the front rooms have good seaviews. However we had a garden room with private terrace and still...

We stayed 10 nights at the hotel in April 2012 in one of the Seaview rooms were more than happy with the overall experience. Like every hotel there are positives and negatives but we felt the good things greatly outweighed any of the bad. In terms of the good things the views from the seaview room are amazing! You have a little balcony over looking the bay and beach and also the downstairs pool which is good to interchange with the beach. The rooms are clean and neat, although not sleek or modern they are comfortable and have all you really need. The Air Con is new, quiet and works well, the pillows weren't overly comfortable but the linen was clean and changed daily during our stay as were the towels when the room was cleaned. You have wifi in the room and throughout the lobby/entrance area although the connection is not the strongest from some parts of the room but it works absolutely fine. We were able to Skype home whenever we needed to. There is also a flatscreen TV in the room with hundreds of cable channels, lots of english movies too, and a minfridge with cheap beers, water etc.
Breakfast was always fresh and nice. Its not a buffet, instead you get your own service of fresh fruit, juice, coffee, assortment of breads and jams plus ham and cheese. There is a homely feel to the place as if you are staying at someone's house, in fact I think a lot of the guests actually knew the owner.
It's close to Praia João Fernandes (150m) and the walk although challenging is the little bit of exercise you need after spending the day doing nothing but laying on the beach. The hotel provides beach towels when needed. Its only a 15 -20 mins walk to the centre of town too.
Staff were lovely and attentive and helped us when we asked for anything. The only slightly uncomfortable thing is that they lock the door every time you leave so you always need to annoy one of the staff to be able to get back into the hotel. But at least it means its secure. The staff understand/speak Spanish and the owner speaks fluent English.
The only bad thing was a slight odour coming from the plumbing in the shower, but we think this is common issue in Brazil as we had a similar problem in our hotel in Rio.
All in all we would definitely recommend staying here and would consider this place again when we come back to Buzios, we will definitely be back we loved Buzios! Its very close to what we condsidered to be the best beach in Buzios and was very good value for money. We paid around $150 AUD (300 Real) a night. Recommended.

Room Tip: Def go for the seaview room. Fitness centre/spas werent terrible, they just didnt have either

Baia do Joao is not the worst hotel we have stayed at but to be fair to all the other hotels around the world we have reviewed on Tripadvsior it can only get 1 star as the quality is so far out of proportion with the price.

It is basically a B&B charging 5 star prices. Even if they reduced their price by 80% - 90% from US$300 (week after carnival) to a more realistic, value for money $30 - $60 (the level of price we have paid elsewhere for similar quality) we could still not give it more than 3 stars. Problems include:

• Grumpiest receptionist in Brazil (although to be fair to her they had her staying there 24 hours a day). Every request was either forgotten or carried out at the 2nd or 3rd attempt. They didn’t even know if we had paid a deposit or not at checkout.
• Grumpiest night porter. Not even an offer to help with the luggage down the steps to the taxi.
• They insist on locking the front door, day and night and you are not given a key. Even a 1 star city hotel will give you a front door key if they don’t have someone to open the door.
• Possibly the most annoying part is that despite seemingly solid walls the noise from the next door room was as if there was no wall at all (room 3 next to 4 and room 1 next to 2). Even if your neighbours are talking in a normal level of voice or rolling over in bed it is as if they were in your room. The only reason for coming to Buzios is for rest and relaxation (otherwise stay in Rio, it’s much more fun). If you can’t sleep in your hotel room then what’s the point.
• Smelly bed clothes. Had to ask for them to be changed after first night. They may have done it the first time but when I asked again 3 days later it was another request ignored. Tiny, old spare blanket
• Lack of privacy. Your balcony looks down on the swimming pool and up the shorts of whoever happens to be sitting on the sun lounger 10 yards away. Because of the angle of the sun lounger they are also forced to stare at you on your balcony. It is all a bit uncomfortable and not the “exclusivity” you want for $300.
• Chairs on balcony don’t recline and had no cushioning. They had the same chairs near the pool with foam cushions. Asked if we could get some. Another ignored / forgotten request.
• Draughts from the windows. Buzios is pretty windy and surprisingly cool at night, even in summer and the French doors onto the balcony are very draughty.
• Breakfasts are boring. Nothing cooked, mainly bread. The last day we checked out at 7.30am and did not get any breakfast.

If you want some plus points, the hotel is not unattractive and has a nice view. We would not stay there again or recommend it. In fact, unless you are an Argentinean package tourist or a Brazilian with umpteen children we would not recommend anywhere in Buzios.

We always welcome well-intentioned criticism from travellers like yourself, however I must inform you that in our country a 5-star hotel tariff is at least three times higher than ours.
We believe all your demands were quickly met from the moment you checked-in, albeit without having seen your room or become aware of our services, until just before you left. We offered solutions without objections to avoid further discussion between yourselves, however, I can assure you that no matter the number of stars, no serious hotel on the planet would allow you to install - in a fantastic panoramic-view balcony - a cord running from side to side to hang out all your intimate clothing. We regret to hear of your unhappy stay at this time, as during your stay both of you seemed perfectly happy and neither of you mentioned this. We have a feeling that there is an underlying meaning to your words.
We remain at your disposal should you wish to discuss this further.

Nice friendly place, very helpful staff eager to assist with restaurant bookings etc

Hotel is secure and seems to have staff available at all times. I would definitely stay here again.

Recommend to get a seaview room, I had no. 2 and it was great, I think any on the same floor would be equally good. The views across the beach and landscape are pretty good.

I initially had a standard room downstairs which wasnt upto my expectations, I could only see a wall out of the window.

Free wireless although it doesnt seem to reach to many of the rooms, works fine in reception though.

Breakfast is simple but fresh each day, it is enough to stop you from being hungry but is a bit boring after a few days.

Ricardo the owner's English is excellent and he can help with any queries.

The hotel is up a hill, it takes about 10mins to walk into town (where the Brigitte Bardot statue is) and a bit longer to get back. There are at least 3 beaches within about 10mins walk, and several others if you want to stretch the legs a bit more.

Room Tip: go for room 2 it has an excellent view and isnt much more expensive than a standard room.

I stayed here in September 2008 and had a wonderful experience. Years later and its still one of my fondest travel memories. The rooms were clean, spacious, airy, and overlooked the sea below. Hammocks on the balcony added an extra element of tranquility. The owner was a sweatheart and the staff was very attentive. If I come back to Buzios, I will definitely stay here again.
