“A special place to totally relax and chill-out !!”
Reviewed May 5, 2009

Great place to switch off and just enjoy yourself. Had the best holiday ever here!!
Service is great and everyone is very helpful and friendly.
Great location - close to the beach and within 20 walk to Centre where there are plenty of eating places to choose from. Try the smaller restaurants off the main streets as some are over-priced and geared purely for the tourists.
A car is really a must around here but the roads are not well-made and full of pot-holes which just adds to the quaintness of the area!!
The Hibiscus is set up a hillside (as are many of the Pousadas in Buzios) and is not really suitable for the elderly with difficulty in walking or I would think for those with very young children as there are stone floors and steps with not much protection or safety railings. But, for a couple who just want to completely relax and switch-off it is PERFECT.
The swimming pool is small but that doesn't matter as the beach is so near and probably one of the best in Buzios.
The breakfast is a buffet-style with a choice of cold meats & cheese, breads, cakes, fruit, cereal and scrambled egg and sausage and fruit juice - very typical of Brazil.....and more than enough.....but maybe the occasional change would be appreciated - but that's more of a personal observation and certainly not a criticism. The staff are lovely and so helpful without being over -the -top or intrusive.
Suffices to say I can't wait to go back again...............

Cannot fault anything about the hotel - the location, service and friendliness are excellent. We were made to very welcome by the English speaking proprietors. I would certainly recommend this hotel.

Once more I returned to that special paradise on earth called Buzios, Brazil – my seventh visit there in four years. But this time for Carnaval and the most memorable of spectaculars and experiences. Whilst Rio de Janeiro has its justly famous Carnaval Parades, it should be noted that Buzios itself has its own festivities and to be part of Carnaval Week in Buzios was equally memorable.

Buzios, normally a very pleasant and popular holiday resort, comes truly alive and vibrant during Carnaval time, its population swelling ten-fold with the thousands of visitors who want to celebrate and party in this lovely town.

With Buzios full to capacity, it was again a pleasure to stay with old friends Kevan Prior and Alicia, his charming wife, at the Pousada Hibiscus Beach, Joao Fernandes. Supported by their ever-helpful staff – a special mention to Celia, Vivian and Alesandro – staying at the Pousada personally for me, is “home away from home” and makes towards a pleasant stay there and of course, in Buzios. It is patently obvious why Pousada Hibiscus Beach consistently is in the “Top Ten” most popular and beautiful hotels in Buzios. Considering there are some 400 pousadas in Buzios, Pousada Hibiscus Beach certainly deserves this accolade.

I noted that there were nine different nationalities staying at the Pousada Hibiscus Beach – Canada, U.S.A., Chile, Argentina, U.K., Ireland, South Africa, Spain and Russia - a true testament to the ever-increasing international reputation of Pousada Hibiscus Beach. Highly recommended.

Until my next visit.

I can hardly believe the reviews posted here. Like some others have commented I wonder if the management of this hotel has written the positive reviews.
At check in I was greated by a lady (receptionist??) with a attitude of what are you doing here.
Asked for a safe deposit box. This is the first time after, staying in I don't remember how many hotels, where I had the idea what in the world am I doing here . Got a lock and key, look at the picture!! Since when does one have to be a handyman in a so called highly rated hotel/resort. The room was very smelly, airco did not work at all except for making noise, bed was so small that even one person could not get a good night sleep no matter what. The shower you needed high maths to control. No matter how I tried only hot water.
I had booked for 3 nights stayed one. Thing is that I had to pay up front for three, oh well the loss encountered was better than staying in this place.
The breakfast was a joke also, who writes the 5+ reviews I wonder???

pauljohnson, OWNER/MANAGER at Pousada Hibiscus Beach, responded to this review, April 10, 2009
We have noticed that on the very few occasions when the hotel receives an extremely negative, 1-star review, the author has a financial axe to grind. In this case, the 3-day reservation was for the month of February, the High Season here in Brazil. In common with most hotels in this busy coastal resort, our cancellation policy, ( clearly displayed on the hotel's website ), states that no refunds will be given in the event of guests' cutting short their stay. This policy was originally defined by the Buzios Tourism Authority, and Hotel Association, to protect members from being left with empty rooms at peak times, just because rainy weather, for example, prompts an early departure.
Perhaps this situation inspíred the author to write the " Unbelieveable " ( sic ) review ?

First of all, the photos:
Number 1 shows the safe lock and key with an ornamental, hand-painted key ring attached. The system is easy to use, free of charge, and no one has ever had any difficulty with it. We discarded the previous digital lock system because of forgotten passwords and technical issues.
Photo 2 is entitled " Kingsize Bed ". All of our rooms have either a standard double size bed, or two twin beds. Nowhere do we advertise " Kingsize ", so this is an invention of the reviewer. We have never received complaints about any bed being uncomfortable.
Photo 3 simply shows a spotlight above an extendable, magnifying make-up mirror, commonly found in most good hotels. So what ?
The air-conditioning and showers are fully functional in all rooms. Our housemaids are trained to check these, and all other equipment every day, and to report any problem to the manager.
Finally, the reviewer comments that " breakfast was a joke. " The buffet system allows guests to help themselves to freshly-squeezed orange juice, six types of tropical fruit, an ample choice of breads and cold-cuts, yoghurts, a choice of cereals, sausage and eggs, freshly-baked croissants and pastries, a variety of cakes, good, strong Brazilian coffee, hot chocolate and 12 different types of tea. Does anyone see the joke ?

We recently returned from a 5 night stay in the “flat” at the hotel.

Buzios is a great beach place with plenty of nice beaches. Fernandes beach is close to the hotel but the beach was just okay; a narrow strip of sand on a beach which is mostly taken over by the restaurants that line the beach. As can be expected in a town that is well known for its beaches, there are literally 100’s of Pousadas (hotels) around.

The Pros:
Our room rate was very reasonable and could fit a family with 2 adults and 2 kids (one of whom is a teenager) though it was a little tight. The “flat” included a kitchennete with a full size refrigerator plus a microwave except that we had one single bathroom. Even considering that the hotel is located amongst several other hotels around, the landscaping and the hotel setting makes it a very idyllic one. We literally spent hours at the pool by ourselves with hardly any sound except for the birds and the wind rustling through the leaves. Breakfast was basic but good enough.

Hotel service was top notch. The folks at the front desk were English speaking and very ready and eager to help in all aspects while the hotel staff was exceptional both with regards to their friendly demeanor and with regards to their quality of service. Any issues were dealt with remarkable efficiency especially considering the “value” positioning of the hotel. We have traveled quite a bit and stayed in a wide spectrum of hotels (from 2 star to 5 star) and we were very impressed with the service in this one. For instance, one of our kids was looking for a book that she forgot to bring from home and one of the owners was quick and very gracious to bring their personal copy from home.

We used the hotel for transfers from Rio to Buzios and back to the airport and the car was very punctual and seemed reasonable – at least compared to the cost cited from companies in Rio. Wi-Fi worked great (perhaps we were benefited by having a room just below the main office with all the technology) and the beach was relatively close.

The Cons:
The hotel was definitely “value” and this was reflected in the quality of the linen/bath towels, the silverware in the kitchenette/breakfast (quite old) and the fact that our bathroom did not have a great deal of pressure with the hot water (thankfully, we didn’t need much since the weather was quite warm). We were told that the issue of the hot water was unique to our flat since it was too far away from the water tank but I would think that this may present an issue for some folks.

We are generally very flexible and open when traveling but the only two issues that we would point out are:

1) The single bathroom in the flat was quite small and the shower had mold/mildew. The cleaning staff did a fine job cleaning but I would think that most people would like a shower with very clean tiles.

2) I am not entirely sure how far the beach really is but it certainly felt more than 100 mts. If you book a room believing that the beach is literally at the end of your room or at the end of the driveway, you will be disappointed. The hotel’s website indicates that the hotel is “100 mt from the beach”. I am not entirely sure how they measure the distance from the beach but it certainly felt quite a little bit further than 100 mts. We obviously didn’t measure the distance with a measuring tape but do have some perspective to make this comment since we live in a house with a 200 ft driveway (66 mts) and our daily walk to the beach felt quite a bit longer than 2 times (or even 5 times) our driveway.

We stayed at this lovely pousada a few months ago and had a wonderful time. The hotel was perfectly placed with just a few minutes walk to the beach. Our room at the pousada had everything we needed including a private verandah where we could sit and watch the sun set, the views were really something special. The staff were also always very welcoming and friendly. Very highly recommended for any stay in Buzious!

Clean, friendly, quiet, basic, nestled against hill, easy walk to unfortunately not-so-great beach with typical infrastructure which shuts down in evenings. Our hut's ocean view was partly blocked by hut below. Significant steps up hill, so not for the infirm. It's a bit of a walk to the main part of the island (centro), where life happens in the evenings, or to most other beaches, so you probably need to take the co-op mini-buses (which are quick and cheap and work remarkably well even quite late into evening) or taxis (which work well but cost a bit more) - or you can rent a buggy to tool around with.
