the beach is georgous, full of tourists, though. If you prefer something quiet, avoid it, Be aware of the street venders, They will try to sell from t shirts to parachute rides. Very expensive

“Not Prepared for Tourists”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 7, 2012

As a Brazillian who knows almost all the coast in Brazil, It looks like Porto was born for the tourism 20 years ago without any planning and still has a lot to improve.
The place (I'm reffering to Porto de Galinhas) is amazing with stunning views and beaches and that's all.
Unless if you are staying the entire day in an nice Resort will you get tired of so many very-poor people asking for selling something or just for "a help". There is not enough Police here, even inside "good-looking" restaurants you can see young children asking for money and the owners just don't care as they got used with that or simply think that "their" children must make some money.
Avoid going to the supermarket as hygiene conditions are something that people here doesn't really care about: I saw a cucaracha walking in the meat inside a freeze and when calling the "manager" she said I was worried "for nothing" and started laughing from me. Most people in this place (not like in all other places in Brazil) are not well educated and consequently do not threat tourists as they was supposed to do. Even in so called "great hotels" don't get surprised if the attendants does not really care about your and/or your problems.
The city with Banks, Post and Services in general called Igarassu far 20min from Porto is like a big mess. I had the unpleasure need of going there just to pick-up a letter in the Post-Office as they just deliver once a week in Porto and I felt in the skin what is about leaving in a 4th world condition. This stinky city is dangerous and with no traffic regulations. Be very careful if going there and preferably ask for some "Pernambucano" to go with you (Pernambucano: People who was born in Pernambuco).
Entities regulating Porto: Please take the lead and make something in order not to make this place impossible to visit in a soon future!

“Worth the trip”

An interesting village but, full of tourist type shops. Some good restaurants. The beach was over crowded, full of vendors.
It is worth a day out.

“Very nice experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 13, 2011

Instead of doing like millions of tourist by paying and taking a boat we used our equipment do go there ourselves. Some people walk there as there is a shallow path in the sea. If you time your tour right you can avoid the tourists and keep your stuff dry...
Once there, some local agent explain you that the place is now protected (my partner was used to go there in the past with friends and family without the actual fuss, but people were not very well behaved) and give you few indications before granting you the bracelet of knowledge...
The reef is composed of few little pools that are (naturally) filled with fish and those pool are now circled by a line that you are not supposed to cross otherwise the agents are going to blow their wistles... but some dont mind if you are respectful to the fish...
The place is actually pretty huge for a reef and you can walk to a great lengh to see all the pools.
Make sure that you have some footwear, but bear in mind that flip flops can get damaged and undo themselves... Mine kept breaking with the water and it was more frustrating than anything...
If you are clever and don't mind getting wet (you're at the beach at the end of the day) you can experience this completly free and if you are early enough not many tourists will bother you or ruin your pictures...
