Owner description: Largest hydroelectric power plant in the world, Itaipu is the current world record holder in power generation and is considered one of the 7 wonders of modern engineering. Built on the Parana River, the seventh largest river in the world, between Brazil and Paraguay, it is 8 km wide, has a maximum height of 196 m and a lake of 1350 km². Itaipu enchants not only for the dimensions and technical aspects, but also for being a vanguard in sustainability and tourism, with several options of visits, from the classic Panoramic Tour and the award-winning Special Tour, that leads to the interior of the plant, to boat trips on the lake and night tours of the plant. Visiting Itaipu is to know, closely, what human capacity can accomplish.

I went there during a conference visit in Foz do Iguacu. It is tough for me to say that one has to go there and see, but if one has some technical background and is interested in this kind of technology, it is absolutely worth to visit it. It is just spectacular and impressive to see how big this plant is. This was the most astonishing part of it. I did a tour that included the inside, also to see how fast the turbines turn. So, if you are interested in technique and engineering, go!

After going to the falls, it is difficult to find anything else worth doing in Foz do Iguaçu. Though definitely not the highlight of the trip, the tour in the Itaipu Dam is very interesting and informative. Guides are kind and competent and you can learn how does a huge hydroelectric works.

Good guiding. Good views.
Guides avoided complicated issues about the dam - only the most positive things were told. But well worth going.
