Dom Pedro I Palace Hotel
Ranked #43 of 79 Hotels in Foz do Iguacu
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 7, 2013

The Dom Pedro is on the main road that links Brazil's Foz do Iguacu with the Iguazu Falls and the Argentinian frontier. It caters to many tourists who either have their own transport or, like us, are with a bus tour.
Its rooms are large, clean and straight-forward and clearly designed for people busy taking in the local sights rather than for those who want to linger in their rooms. But the hotel perfectly comfortable and two pools to splash about in after you have done the same in the world's most impressive water feature. the Iguazu Falls itself.
Rooms are all air-conditioned. No bugs in our room but our bathroom was visited by a tiny frog from the drain - Dom Pedro is near the subtropical forest after all!
Breakfasts were superb with a big choice of cakes, pastries and fresh tropical fruit, as well as cooked and continental international staples.
Our package - with the highly recommended M-Tour from Montevideo, Uruguay - included an all-you-can-eat buffet at Dom Pedro. This was excellent with another huge choice, plenty of vegetarian and healthy options and a chef ready to carve freshly roasted pork joint for you as you enter.
Staff spoke Portuguese, Spanish and English. This isn't a luxury resort hotel but it is a really good base for exploring an amazing corner of the world. The two of Foz it itself is a few miles away but the hotel is on a bus route.

I went to Iguacu on a business trip, and I chose this hotel beceause of the location. The hotel was cheap, but the rooms were spacious, and clean. The staff in the reception were helpful and friendly. The breakfast was very simple but okey. I do not recommend the dinner at this hotel, the food at Bourbon Hotel approximately a 5 min walk from Dom Pedro Hotel was much better.

Overall, if you need a cheap place to stay that is clean, this is the place for you!

I chose this hotel based on the reviews I read here. I was expecting a basic hotel that was clean. When we arrived, I was greatly disappointed. The lobby looked decent and the temperature was decent, but as soon as we began to climb the steps my optimism fell - it was HOT, stuffy and smelled like an armpit. The carpet in the hallway is disgusting.

Our room came with air conditioning, however, they did not have it on, even though it was 100F outside. It took us 6 hours (until 2am) to cool it down to a comfortable temperature and to do this, we had to shut the door to the bathroom, so that remained an oven. The following day, we left the air on low so that we would not have another sleepless night, however, the house keeping staff turned it off.

Our bathroom had a major ant problem. When we complained, they sprayed it down (no other rooms were available for us to move). This worked until the next morning. The shower was covered in mold - I am not talking about mold worked into the grout, I mean layers of black mold, indicating that the shower had not seen a brush or bleach in ages. The door to the room was extremely poor quality. The walls are thin - you can hear people in the next room talking and watching tv. There was lots of noise all night long. The towels were paper thin, one even had a huge hole. They do not provide shampoo, conditioner or lotion - which is common at cheap hotels in Brazil, but I do not consider this hotel cheap. True, all the hotels in Foz are over priced, and the cost of this hotel is lower. However, I would not consider this good value.

The buffet dinner was average at best. The drink prices at dinner were excellent. The included breakfast was typical Brazilian fruit, bread, meat and cheese - perfect.

The staff was very helpful with advising us on how to get to the park and how to save money on the tours. I was only disappointed that when we inquired about the power plant tour they did not tell us that sandals and flip flops are not allowed. In the end we drove all the way out there, but were unable to take the tour because we did not wear our gym shoes.

The location is great, between the falls and the town and with all the other hotels.

Do not stay here unless for budget reasons this is your only option.

Conveniently located in Rodovia das Cataratas (the road to the Falls), Dom Pedro I stands right between two of the best known self-called "5 stars" Foz do Iguaçu's Hotels. Of course, it's not in the same league - and definitely doesn't intend (nor pretend) to. As for myself, luxury hotels do make sense if I plan to take the most of them. But when my first purpose for traveling is outdoor leisure (as in Foz do Iguaçu, where seeing the Falls, enjoying local food, shopping, that is all about it), staying in the hotel will hardly ever be my priority.
But those in-hotel facilities are exactly what Dom Pedro's "luxury" (?) neighbors try to impose in exchange for their more upbeat reputation. They'll provide you with better rooms, plush surroundings, fancy decoration. But on the flip side, the well-heeled guests will be charged almost US$ 400 a day for a room that will cost roughly 5 times more than at Dom Pedro. Admittedly, both "rich-guys" hotels will righteous claim that their prices include in-hotel dinner. What isn't said is that this dinner is mandatory, that is, you'll pay for it even if you don't have it.
And to skip Puerto Iguazu's unbeatable barbecue restaurants just across Argentina's border for a tedious dinner inside the hotel walls would be really a bad deal. Simply out of question.
