Great trip through the forest clad mountains with occasional breathtaking views of the mountains and the track you have followed. Arriving in Morretes you are greeted by small children running alongside the train hoping for a few coins. Go for the cheapest tickets, all seats are allocated and there is no real difference in quality unless you want luxury. Get the bus back from Morretes bus station (approx 1 km from train station) or look out for a coach standing at the station, it may be the service to Curitiba which leaves about 15:00.

We rode in the luxury cars, which are 2 cars and travel on their own, not with the economy train. The interior of the cars take you back to the 30's with the decor, finishes, and furniture. You sit in armchairs or love seats, have a table in front of you, and are served drinks and breakfast. The guide narrates in both Portuguese and English. We drove back from Morretes and stopped in Antonina for lunch at Restaurante Buganvil for some barreado. I highly recommend booking this upgraded car, cost was about $270 BR. for the 3 hour trip. I suggest booking a seat on the left side of the train for better views.

This Wednesday, we went on the train ride from Curitiba to Morretes, which is about three hours. The train is slow but the views are very beautiful. On this train ride, you can see waterfalls, large mountains covered in trees (which reminds me of the Allegheny Mtns. when I used to drive through Pennsylvania in the U.S.). In addition, you can see a variety of flowers in different colors and rail bridges that cross rivers. The sights are very beautiful and it is a very good afternoon with the family. When you arrive in the old town of Morretes, there are a couple of nice restaurants to go to have a lunch and look around some shops that sell souvenirs.
The service on the train was very good as well. The lady who was our tour guide on the train was very pleasant. The guide spoke in English and Portuguese and talked about when the best time came to take pictures. The executive car we were in entitled us to have a snack in a nice little box as well as choice of refreshment. The tour guide made the atmosphere very nice and relaxing as she explained the history of the train and its construction of the railway.
You can decide to take a train back or take a bus through a company such as Graciosa. In addition, you can take a bus to the beach and then a bus back to Curitiba. Either way, you will enjoy the day on the train.

Well I do have an axe to grind here, booked the trip "turismo" , then found we were in "encomico" which is pretty basic and a quite hard on your rear end after three hours trip, after complaining when we arrived at Morretes we were told that the train was full so they had to use the encomico but we had a can of coke and a speaking guide so it was the same a turismo. HAH! By that reasoning turismo + can of coke+ guide equals luxury. All this was explained with a straight face. Brasileiros still have a lot of catching up in the customer service area

We took this as far a Morretes. We had lunch there and then took the train back. It is a great trip through forests. Morretes is a cute town with tourist shops and good restaurants for lunch
