“Check out the Bronze doors!”
Reviewed June 1, 2013

This is a lovely Church, almost fully restored, with elaborate mosaics throughout. Many have unexpected modern touches - check out the triangle above the main entrance that includes images of natives as they were found in the 1500s, a pope, and a few guys in suits and ties (I guess the guys who paid for the restoration). The right front door panel has some sort of tribute to world war II soldiers, complete with a tank. Huh, go figure. Jarring but cool. The marble work in the interior is all real - no faux marble here, and the restored mosaics are colorful and lovely.

“Must see!”
Reviewed November 1, 2012

The Basilica besides being the shrine for Our Lady of Nazare, the object of one of the main catholic devotion in the world, is beautifully decorated, being an oasis of peace and faith in Belem.

“a bad surprise”
Reviewed October 26, 2012

Rather a religious spot, of minor, if any touristic relevance.
Not worth the time to get there.
Second Sunday of October, the place is filled with more than 1 million people who come from all over Brazil.
Make your hotel reservation well ahead of time as the hotels get fully packed during this time.
