Outdated in every way. sad and old. Nice but uneven service, which is the only reason I gave it two stars. Sticky floors, poor maintenance in the rooms and in the public areas. Generally just a drag to stay there. Breakfast was OK - good variety. Lunch was horrible. Actually horrible. A buffet without a single edible item.

The hotel has not renewed for years, although very well located and with spacious rooms. Good restaurant. It is very easy to reach the main city attractions in minutes from there. If you do not care for luxury, only a place to sleep, cheap but secure, here you are.

Quite possibly worst Hilton have stayed in. It really shouldn't have that name on it - I have noticed that they use a slightly different font to the other hiltons so am not sure if that's a new brand under the Hilton family?? I had questioned myself as to why there is such a dearth of hiltons in Brazil and we get one in ... Belem?

We stayed in a "renovated room" and was underwhelming. From the bath to the bedroom renovations were only done sporadically and selectively. Still I would hate to get a yet-to-be-renovated room. Staff at checkin were useless and annoying. We arrived early by boat and we had to wait til midday for checkin. To which I responded you have no rooms available until midday? He then let me checkin at 10 - just over an hour. So I checked my bags at the cloak room came back at 10 got bags back out and went to room. I asked the cleaning lady who was in hallway and she said it hadn't touched it. Hold on. If you CAN let someone go to their room why wouldn't you?? Anyway we were dog-tired due to boat crossing and slept til afternoon when we then discovered the exec lounge. The staff were fantastic here. Exceptional job. The room itself though is just two old hotel rooms they've gutted (and done a better renovation job on). There are three tables of a tight fitting four chairs and two couches. That is to say, it's tiny. At times it got too crowded. Appetizers were nice and drinks good though. Brekky was laughable. There are two hot options, One day we had chicken nuggets for brekky. I was wondering whether Ronald mcDonald had brought them up. Or whether originally there were cheeseburgers but the hamburglar had taken them.

Anyway if you are in Belem there really is not much else to choose from for a good hotel but for value I'd still be looking elsewhere.

The best part of staying in this throwback is the feeling, when exiting the lobby whilst wearing sunglasses, that you are in fact in the 1970s and a plotting a coup as part of your role with the CIA.

The downside is the drab wooden panelling on the hallways, the chair that fell apart when I sat on it, the Legionnaires Disease I caught from the shower (kidding, but it did smell like Venice), the plugged toilet, the DSL that did not work, the wireless that wasn’t much better, the gauntlet of scary homeless dudes just to the left of the hotel, the dearth of services around the place, and the ever-suffocating humidity.

You can get a reservation at great hotel in a world-class city during shoulder season for cheaper than my modest room cost here. Pass.

Room Tip: Ask for the renovated rooms. Ask to be upgraded for free. Ask for a smile. You might get one.

This property isn't quite the standard of any other Hilton that I've stayed. Our refurbished room was on the executive floor. It was quite nice though underwhelming. A few finishing touches wouldn't go astray (like a balcony door that stayed locked, a nicer finish on the tub (it too had received an average refurbishment)). The executive lounge was very small but had what you'd expect to be available. The hotel is in a good location. We found the Customer Service to be patchy - some staff were very good while others very ordinary. There are notices around the hotel saying that due to a climate of 90% humidity it difficult to maintain the building. But it's a bit of a cop-out since other hotels are able to overcome this issue. The a/c system while cool isn't very effective. Happy to have used the points plus pay option - otherwise poor value.

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room.

The Belem Hilton has nothing to do with a Hilton Hotel as you would expect it. The rooms are tiny, badly cleaned, old and not maintained. Staff is friendly but with the security in the lobby you feel more like a criminal then a guest. Breakfast is good and staff very friendly. Would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

The Hilton Hotel in Belém is about as central as it is possible to be in this busy city. It is a fine looking hotel from the outside and seems to be popular with airline crews and business people. Staff are courteous, helpful and friendly and will do what they can to make your stay comfortable. Rooms are fairly decent, with A/C and all the usual amenities. The "balcony" is a bit of a misnomer, in that it is nothing more than a little triangle with standing room only. A chair wouldn't fit in this tiny space. Line voltage is 220VAC, as clearly marked in red on all outlets, but recepcao will lend you a step down transformer to recharge the batteries in your devices. The swimming pool and poolside bar provide welcome relief from the tropical heat. The business center downstairs provides internet access for a small fee. The major drawback here is that the hotel chooses to charge a rather steep fee for breakfast, unlike most hotels which include it in the daily rate. When you pay around $200 a night for a room, you would expect to be ushered in to an extensive - and gratis - breakfast buffet. Seek out the local bakery just around the corner from the hotel for your morning salgado, suco and cafezinho.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the pool to get that "resort" feeling.
