Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: The railway section connecting Ouro Preto to Mariana enchants visitors of Brazil and the world with its 18 km of history, culture, and natural beauties. On one side, the first village and capital of Minas - Mariana. On the other, a city that is a world heritage and attracts tourists from all over the world - Ouro Preto. The trip of approximately one hour is incredible through the almost unblemished beauties of the old gold route, the vegetation that varies between Mata Atlantica (Atlantic Forest) and Cerrado (tropical savanna) and, of course, through the baroque architecture of more than 300 years of history.

“An excellent way to get to Mariana”
Reviewed April 21, 2013

As of time of writing, the Trem da Vale is operating with a diesel while the steam engine is being shopped in Mariana. No reliable word on when the Skoda steamer will be back on the 18 km run from Ouro Preto to Mariana. Nevertheless, it's a great trip and should not be missed if you have an affinity for trains. The schedule allows a couple of hours to explore Mariana and have lunch in the fine Mineiro kilogramma restaurant in Praça Cláudio Manuel before heading back to Ouro Preto on the train. Enjoy the ride through steep river valleys with fazendas, waterfalls and purple flowered jacarandá trees.

“Back in time”
Reviewed November 4, 2012

Although not dramatic the scenery is very nostalgic and I felt like going back in time. The train moves slowly which gives it a romantic feel. Kids love not only the tour itself but also the train station in Mariana where there is a fabulous playground entirely made with iron parts. You can buy the ticket directly at the station, it´s very cheap.

The train wends its way through thegorges on the way to Mariana. Scenery is nice but the engineering feat that allowedthis railway to be laid is amazing.

“Nicer Scenery than that to Tiradentes.”
Reviewed April 15, 2012

Only Fridays to Sundays,

Lovely way to return to Ouro Preto from Mariana which is smaller and more charming than Ouro Preto. Mariana is half an hour away (bus stop is north east of tirandente sq., runs twice hourly, single ticket costs R$3) . all sites are well indicated in the streets (no maps required) and the churches charge only $2 compared with the $8 in op. and they let you take photos which you cannot do in Ouro Preto, and you can climb the bell tower of the basilica at no extra cost which has a beautiful view of the town.

The train runs between ouro preto & mariana. we took the 1400h back from mariana. The 1 hour pictureque ride cost R$25 single, R$13 for over 60 years old.

from ouro ptreto train station, take the local bus back up to tirandentes square R$1.90 Single.

“Train ride”
Reviewed April 10, 2012

Nice experience. Some intereting landscape and since I usually am the driver it was nice to stare out the window. Mariana is a bit more contemporary (read dirty & industrial), but the historic section is small and easily matches OP. Its a nice diversion for a half day away from the steep hills of OP.
