Its great you enjoyed your visit! Bonito can get very hot during the day and night during summer and being a kind of open-air restaurant we can only use ventilators and fans in the main salon. At the end of 2012 we invested in a huge meter-high ventilator to cool the salon. You might have seen it in the rafters. Or there is the ever popular Brazilian option of cooling down with an ice cold beer to go with your food - always a good excuse to open a beer here in Bonito!

“Horrible Prainha, great Pirarara”
Reviewed January 11, 2013 via mobile

I went there to try the famous Traira. It was HORRIBLE! The fish was dry, no taste, and way too expensive for what it was.

Then the owner sat down with us and started chatting and when we politely told him we weren't impressed with the Traira and the overcooked and dry Filet Mignon, he told us to come back that evening and try the Pirarara, a fish from the Amazon.

Because the owner was so friendly, he tried again and weren't disappointed! The fish was seriously DELICIOUS, service great, and the owner even offered us a free Nutella petit gateau (which is also delicious but very small too).

The atmosphere is very nice and the service impeccable. The prices are higher than Tapera, a fantastic restaurant in Bonito, but it's because it's the most famous place in Bonito.

All in all, I would go back to have the opportunity to chat with João, and ask him which dish should I order, before I go for the famous option. But it is a bit expensive for what you get.

We're sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy the Traira. It might be a very Brazilian flavour of dish which did indeed make the restaurant famous. Hard to believe, but originally, the restaurant opened with just a few seats and a very simple menu, just serving Traira and beer, without even knives and forks for its guests!

It's a well-known fish in Brazil because it has so many small spines, notoriously difficult to remove, and not always an easy fish to source. Because it made the restaurant famous, and is so popular with many Brazilian guests of ours, it will probably always be on our menu. But thank god you did talk with João, a real character in the restaurant, and that you gave another chance and tried the Pirarara which is very delicious. Okay, maybe the petit gateau was small for you but maybe it's because you enjoyed it so much! I know it's my favourite dessert on the menu and if you come back to visit, I'll ask the kitchen to make us one each.

In general, we keep our prices as competitive and fair as possible, without compromising on quality. There are other places which can be far more expensive to eat. We always try to source the best quality produce from our suppliers, maintain well-paid staff for good service, and ensure the highest standards in our preparation and running of the restaurant - a lot of boring back-end stuff that makes sure we give you the best that we can offer in a truly beautiful ambience. And we accept credit cards!

All in all, we like to think that Casa do João is well-known here in Bonito because of the pride, work and passion that we put in to the restaurant, and we never take that for granted. I hope one day you come visit us again and João is always good for a chat - it's difficult to stop him!

“Great food with Wifi, and a shop selling souveniers”
Reviewed November 30, 2012

It was a great place to have lunch! Many of the fishes on the menu also the same fishes we saw in the Rio da Prata, haha. The fried fish was delicious, and the set meal for 2 people was more than sufficient for the two of us.

There's WIFI if you'll like to hang out, and a shop nearby selling souveniers

“Great food and best service in a Bonito Restaurant!”
Reviewed November 18, 2012

We came to dine on a busy weekend of a local public holiday. There was a huge queu and we were told we would wait for approximately an hour. After 5minutes we were told that some people gave up and it would be only half an hour at max. After 5 more minutes we were seated and being greeted by the restaurant owner, Joao, who was super friendly. The staff were very efficient, the drinks were made fast and tasted awesome! We had the grilled traira and it was cooked to perfection. Nothing short of amazing!

Fantastic to hear that you had such a good experience, makes us happy to know! Public holidays and events here can get crazy and we sometimes end up with a huge queue outside later on in the evening.

When the city is very full, we recommend coming earlier around 7pm as the salon is usually just warming up. We always try to work efficiently and have your food order on the table within 15 or 20 minutes so you don't get too hungry waiting around, but we like to hope that for those who do queue up during the busy season, that the wait is worthwhile and you leave happy and full!

Come visit us again sometime!
